Could well be the switch on the side of the gearbox casing. possibly more of a mechanical malfunction than an electrical one.

Jim Bailey posted this originally over on RL;"The neutral safety switch on the trans sends the power to the lights. It is just behind the lever that the shifter cable attaches to on the left side of the trans. The wire from that switch goes up inside the car to the right front corner of the spare tire well...check the plug in connections"

here's a picture - it's on the forward driver's side - to test the switch pull the wires and jump them - then turn ignition switch to on position - reverse lights should light - if not check tranny switch with ohmmeter - if it's working ok check bulbs and mounts - might even want to check them first - and that connection in the rear hatch area - good luck

That's obviously a picture of the manual transmission version of the reverse light switch. The neutral safety switch looks much different and is on the other side of the automatic transmission and I haven't found a picture yet.

before you go on a wild goose chase,
look under the pod and see the arm that holds the ignition cylinder halfway tween the column and cylinder.

there is a 2 wire switch screwed to the underside of the arm,
this tells the car that the key is in the ignition cylinder,

if the wires are not connected to this switch,
then the PRND32 will not illuminate on the tach nor will the reverse lights come on
