O2 Sensor Fitment question MY80
I bought a new oxygen sensor. But when i went to replace it i found that there is not enough clearance between the bung and torque tube for the sensor to fit. Which explains why the old one had the wire sheared off at the top.
I believe the one i bought is a universal single wire sensor. Is the 928 specific sensor shorter in length? I really don't see how it could possibly fit. |
Needs picts, is the exhaust original? Motor mounts and hangers?
All the O2 sensors seem about the same size to me. |
My cat has two "bung holes" heh heh.
My sensor is installed in the angled one and the one on top is plugged. I believe that several aftermarket units are configured this way also. |
Car has stock exhaust as far as i can tell. It has the bung pointing straight up. I'll take a look to see if it has an angled one which would make the most sense because there is absolutely no way a standard o2 sensor would fit in the vertical bung

Is the car a Euro model?
M28/11 or M28/12 engine code? ZZZ in the vin#? |
car is a 1980 US version
i looked at the cross piece in the y-pipe and it only has the vertical bung for the o2 sensor |
One solution, if you don't have a second bung that would allow for an easy install, have a muffler shop weld in a new bung. Should not cost too much, and they would have the car on the lift, and could install your new O2 sensor. Good luck with your project.

Is the Y-pipe original? Does it have a catalytic converter in it? I used to have a "test-pipe" in place of my catalytic converter on my 1984 US model, and the O2 sensor bung placement in that pipe was incorrect, causing the O2 sensor to hit the torque tube as you mentioned. On the stock catalytic converter though, there was plenty of clearance. Definitely post some pictures of the Y-pipe.
Here is the Y-pipe with poor clearance: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1480604103.jpg |
