928's still on the road

I wonder how many 928's are still on the road. I mean, valid licensed and insured. I will take a guess, maybe 5,000??

There were 61000 built over the 17 year run. Assuming 1/3 of them were destroyed in some fashion or another, you still have 40000 more or less. My guess is somewhere around 35000 to 40000 worldwide.

Maybe 7 -

My 1st 928 ownership experience began about 10 years ago after finally over coming being a bit intimidated by what I considered it's complexity compared to the early 911. Since then, except for the well attended special weekend Porsche gatherings - I've only seen maybe 7 different "Free Ranging" 928's while traveling on the open road. I HOPE there are thousands still out there somewhere - but they sure do seem to be scattered around pretty thin.

My last sighting was when I had a pack of new Corvettes blow past me out near Albuquerque last summer with a Porsche 928 s4 and a Ferrari 458 tucked in amongst them. Since they were all traveling so close together I got the impression they were members of a Sports Car Club out for a run.

Is there anyone who has kept a running number of 928 encounters ?

Michael

I have seen maybe two or so around here over the years. Most probably from the Chicago area. There aren't very many left. I think only 22,000 were sold in the US. In summer I do see many sports cars. That is why I think there are very few actually licensed and driven. I have had notes left on my wind shield asking if I want to sell the car.

Yes, that's my understanding too; about 1/3 of the total were US spec cars. I would guess that at least 1/2 still survive, leaving about 10000 in the US, plus the ROW cars that made it to this country. Still, I agree, you do not see many in the wild at all. Very rare to see. But to put that into perspective, there were many many more 911s produced and sold during that same period, and how often do you see a 911 from 78 to 95 on the streets? Just as rare, if not more so. That may have to do with 911 values, making them far less likely to be driven.

I see quite a few 911's here, some older. Many Corvettes, BMW, Mercedes , a Bentley or two, Ferrari and others. People always notice my 928, "what kind of car is that?" .

There were reported to be 156 928s gathered on May 28th, 2017, at Brooklands Historical Race Track in London, as posted on Rennlist, and in one of the pictures you can count about 142 of them.

10 years ago it seems like I saw them all the time in my area, no so much anymore. I suspect they are all in garages or back yards because everyone got a quote on how much it is to fix whatever has gone wrong in the last 10 years.

Not sure if the DMV would give out that information, but that would be one way to find out what 928's are actually licensed and insured.
