928S Pro Touring Build

After building a 911 Rothmans Tribute and RS tribute, I have decided to switch gears and build what I guess you would call a Pro Touring 928. If you are a Porsche purist, then I don't think this thread is for you.
I bought a 1983 129,000 mile 928s California smog legal 5 speed. I will be replacing the engine with a LS3 e-Rod 430hp smog legal for California crate engine. In addition I purchased a 2004 C5 Z06 manual 6 speed. I will be redoing all of the suspension, bushings, steering and a lot of other things as I come across them. I have read a few threads of amazing 928 builds, which has given me insight and I hope to provide additional information to others who are thinking about a build.
Here is the car before I started taking apart last weekend.

I am currently working with Ron Davis Radiators building a radiator that fits stock location with LS3 Plumbing, including engine oil cooler.

I will be addressing the steering rack rebuild along with new ball joints on arms as the parts come in.

I take lots of pictures, so if there is something specific, please ask, I might have it.

Next step is to remove everything in engine compartment to prep for new coating.

Very Interesting Project -

Hey Blagave, This project will be very interesting to follow. No doubt - it will be something that only a very select few master technicians with a tremendous range of skills could successfully complete.. But mercy - why not just buy a race ready Z06 Vette with a body kit and paint Porsche across the back end. It would probably perform better and save your dad a WHOLE LOT of money :)

Please keep us posted and best of luck, Michael

JK.....I am the Dad and this is therapy for me. I really enjoy doing the out the box projects, it isn't about the money, but building something different and done right. I have built a few other cars and neither had a detailed direction when i started, so this is a journey for me to see what inspires me or not. So far I am excited and have lots of goodies on order.

With so few 928's remaining in stock condition, it is kind of sad to see another one dismantled. There are so many other cars to modify. Yes, a race ready Z06 Vette for $110K out the door, ready to blow your socks off, pick up chicks or otherwise wrap yourself around a tree.

As I said at the beginning of the thread.....if you are a purist, this thread is not for you.
We can argue all day long about modifying a car and what is acceptable and what is not in the eyes of others. Making the 928 better to be more enjoyable and reliable is not a bad thing. The reason there are so few 928's around is.....the cars were not all that great to begin with and that, is why the cars have fallen by the way side and are so inexpensive to buy.

Anyhow, I don't want the build thread to be about others disapproving of my choices on my build

It's your car do as you wish. But the 928 is really a great car, set the land speed record back in 1986 for stock production and was top of the Porsche line and most expensive at that time. It had many new features not found on other cars. The 911 crowd just did not like the fact it was a V8 front water cooled engine. It is reliable if you take care of it. It has great handling and enough power to get you in trouble. It is not a Vette, Ferrari, or BMW. It is not as fast but it is after all 30 years old. I even saw John Denver driving his 928 in Vail one time.

Did a lot of cleaning and bead blasting on suspension parts. Just waiting for new parts to arrive to the the rebuild.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1503872798.jpg

Installed new rear hub bearing. I had a tool I made up to install the bearings and did one with tool and tried the press for the second one, which worked great.i put the bearing in freezer over night and wiped wd40 on the inside of hub.

Great work

Removed up arm ball joints on front suspension. Previous people working on car must gave used a pickle fork to seperate ball joint and gouged aluminum. Doesn't appear an issue. The ball joints have plastic carriage and one of them was destroyed, both ball joints were in bad shape.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1503873328.jpg

Really enjoying all the info, keep it coming! Nothing wrong with putting a car in a place where you want it, my 83s looks like an s4, been messed about with, enjoyed, but haven't the money/skills, to put an ls motor in it!!!
