SF Bay Area Brake & Lamp/Smog for 928
Anyone on the SF Peninsula that can recommend a shop that knows 928's (1979) who can do both Brake & Lamp as well as a Smog inspection?
Most shops I've questioned say they will do/try the inspections but seem more geared to tuning Honda's and Toyota's. Would prefer not to have to drive off the peninsula but if no other option, will do so. Thanks guys Bob |

Why do you need a brake and lamp inspection? Did you get a ticket?
I've never actually had a brake and lamp inspection done on any car and I'm a lifelong California resident.

I have to retitle the car because unbeknownst to me, almost 2mos. AFTER I bought it, the car was salvaged at DMV.
![]() It had a clean title and although it was taking me some time to get things repaired, etc., I never anticipated showing up to my DMV appt. to finding it had been salvaged. By who, I asked? The last registered owner was the answer. Will try to make a long story short, but I bought the car from relatives of the "owner" who had passed away, and they couldn't find the Pink-slip, registration, or license plates for the car, and judging by what was going on at the house at the time I bought the car, I wasn't surprised. Paid only $500 for it, so was willing to take a chanced, and wasn't getting any dishonest vibes from the relatives, just a sad situation going on for them. I'll post a link to my original thread from a few years ago here: https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-928-technical-forum/769438-my-1979-928-500-a.html So what happened is the relatives didn't know that the car had not been registered in the deceased's name, and when the real owner found out he had passed and didn't know who was in possession of the car almost 2mos later, they went down to the DMV and salvaged the car. Partly my fault for not doing the paperwork faster, but my first visit to both AAA and DMV, the people there, hearing my story said it would be better to find the paperwork and /or license plates and the family could never find them. So it is was it is at this point. If I can get them to change the title back to clean, which I heavily doubt, great, but I'm not sweating it. Has been a fun father-son project, although a 4 year father-son project, with lots of stoppages in between for house renovations. Anyway, after a lot of repairs and paperwork, getting ready to get my inspections done to get everything legit. In CA, you must get Brake&Lamp inspection, Smog inspection, and a CHP VIN inspection, although I have a few Police Officer friends who may be able to verify the VIN for me. |
