clutch disks
 

when i converted this car from auto to manual i noticed the shaft the clutch disks sit on was pretty severely worn where the disks slide - i let it go at the time since i didn't know if what i was doing would actually work - since i had never driven the car i figured i could always come back to it - so now i'm back - i have a replacement shaft that looks to be in nice shape - the tranny and clutch parts i swapped in were from a 79 - i'm thinking the car needs new disks and pressure plate - when i look for the parts i see some places will say the 79 disks are no longer available but disks for an 84 are available - other places (including our host's site) will say the disks are the same for 79-84 - so are they the same? - what are the part numbers i need for a 79 clutch? - and what about the pressure plate - are they also the same for 79-84? - i have some used disks from an 86 that i pulled at a junkyard - are they the same? - they sure do look the same ...but? - thanks

I looked up the numbers from my order when I replaced the discs and pressure plate on my 81 Euro several years ago.

Forward disc: 928-116-011-35-M38

Rearward disc: 928-116-011-36-M100

Some online parts suppliers list these numbers as compatible with 78 - 86; I'm not sure of the differences (if any) between a 79 and an 81 though.

thanks johnson - those are the same numbers i found for the 84 - i guess i'll go with those

so one of these disks (forward) is about $150-200 - the other (rearward) is about $350-400 - they look the same - why such a difference? - does one wear out faster than the other? - one thicker?

The center splined hubs are different between the forward and rearward discs. One has a longer hub than the other I believe.

Why not just have them relined? It would be much cheaper.

If your disks do not look different( ie the center spline much long on one of the disks) then you really would have issues.

hey stepson - i have sent out some emails to brake reliners here in denver asking if they do clutches also - no responses yet - where did you get yours done? - when i said they looked the same i meant they basically look the same - one of the spline hubs is longer than the other but $200 longer?..i don't think so - if relining the spares i have is way cheaper i might go that route

You may have to find a clutch relining service in your area. The originals are surprisingly thin from the factory, but there have been threads about having it done.

And really, I agree, why couldn't Porsche have designed it to be interchangeable?
