Brakes

Putting the car back together..
The drivers side brake went back on the disc no issue, but passenger side the pistons are fully extended. Out 14mm, I cannot squeeze them back, admittedly I did not try real hard (don't want to damage them), any ideas ?
Also what actually makes them retract in real opps ?
I do have both the bleed valves open when I try to push the pistons back.
Thanks Sox

Thinking further The side that is the issue had the pads out of it for 3 weeks or so, I would venture that the "square seals" have let the pistons go all the way out. If so how much force y'all recon is needed to to push the pistons back ?

Those pistons are filthy. I would recommend cleaning them and replacing the seals, or you're likely to end up with a leak. If it's pushed past the seals and they are old, you may have a swollen seal that will tear when you push it back in anyhow. Also, I'd dusconnect them entirely to push them back in so you're not inadvertently pushing any crud back up into the reservior.

The pistons are not really dirty, the phone camera makes the slate gray look like dirt...
Pic of one outside the caliper.
Next pic doing a pressure test for leaks in the seals (Al bars in the the calipers)
Thanks Sox

Use what it takes to retract them.

They all do that. You can open up the bleeders to make it easier, but it's not required.

Yep, what KDJones said

I guess do your best to make sure they are being evenly pressed in. Might be easier to do 1 at a time with a piece of wood to protect them. If yo're doing both and pressing from the center, there will be more pressure on the center so they won't be trying to go on straight which makes it harder.

i would close the bleed valves, if you have them open. Take the cap off the reservoir so the fluid has a place to go. Then press then in with your clamp with the bar on both pistons or do them one at a time.

Thanks y'all
Got it done, had to pump them out first using the brake pressure. Then put them back in 1 at a time and used a flat round washer with a 'C' clamp to put them back in. Kind of like putting in a seal.
As stated above doing a leak test now.
