86’ 951 Won’t Start

Bit of a back story...

Car sat for ~ 3 years in the garage. Finally got the time to get it running again/fix some existing issues.

-Main Cam tower gasket replaced
-Cam sprocket seals replaced
-rear cam tower gasket (the cork one)
-Upper & Lower front balance shaft seals replaced
-A/C conversion (compressor, dryer, condenser, o rings, lines, fittings)
-Alternator replacement
-timing & balance shaft rollers
-All belts
- new injectors
- replaced distributor cap, spark plugs, wires
- replaced starter

Anyway got it all back together and it started just fine. I had a tapping sound in the the cam tower but I’m pretty sure that was a riser that didn’t soak long enough. After idling for a few minutes it went away.

Let it idle for 20 minutes and all sounded/felt normal. Rev’d variously but cautiously and never over 2500rpm.

Shut it off, waited 20 minutes and then went for a drive. Started first try and smooth idle.

Going down the road felt fine under 2500 rpm. As I got to 3000 it just didn’t feel right. Started to get a lot of vibration and it felt like it was really working, almost forcing too much. Hard to explain but something wasn’t right. Decided to turn it around back home.

Got about 1/2 mile from the house and at 2500 heard a loud what almost sounded like a back fire and car shut off.

Opened it back up, everything looks correct, set at TDC and all marks line up. Now it won’t stay running for more than 1-2 seconds then dies out. Very rough start....

Any ideas?

Check the plug for the AFM. If not completely seated it can cause your symptoms. Otherwise I would do a compression check to make sure.

Try spinning engine over 720-degrees by hand, does it go all the way?

Check distributor cap and rotor orientation.

Rotor screw stripped or fell out so rotor is spinning on it's shaft?

Some people try to turn back their "odometers." Not me. I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

Remember there's TWO screws that hold rotor on. One holds nose-piece onto cam. And second holds rotor onto nose-piece. Either one being loose will fall off and cause rotor to spin out of position.

Also measure AFM output-voltage, intake-manifold vacuum. You may have vacuum-leak.
