A/C issues on '86 951
 

I had my a/c converted over to r134 by local Porsche shop. After they were done I had "cooler" air but the tech said that these 944's don't really cool very well so not to expect much out of it. Am I to infer that either he wasn't a good a/c tech or that there is a shortcoming in the 944 system after all?

A couple of weeks later the system quit working and I assume there's a leak somewhere. :confused:

update: the tech had included dye in the recharge of the system and I didn't know. Since I was under the car for another unrelated matter I decided to get my UV flashlight and magic glasses to look around the compressor for leaks. There it was....drips under the bottom of the compressor, unseen by the naked eye. New compressor on order. After it's installed, off to the shop for servicing.

i have converted several 944s from R12 to R134a and they get just as cold. If the system is working correctly, you should be able to see vent temps in the low 40's (or better) at 2000 RPM and moving.

The front seal behind the clutch is a common leak area (in most used/worn compressors), and I'm surprised the shop didn't check.

I agree - I had 4 separate shops tell me that the 1980’s technology in the 944 a/c meant that I couldn’t expect really cold air. After studying basic a/c concepts for awhile, I had my air down to 40 degrees F, even on a 95 degree day. Don’t believe the ‘experts’!
