Auto Thority chips
Another thread on the 951... background is I bought the 86 951 a couple months ago. Decided I wanted to get to 300 HP, so rang up Lindsey Racingg. Ended up buying the 270 RWHP chips, 3.0 FPR and boost enhancer. Exhaust to follow later maybe.
Installed these parts and it wouldn’t start. After a bunch of messing with it, put the old chips and Afpr back in, left the boost enhancer installed. And it started up fine. I guess the chips were no good. So, through this process I learned the old chips (now back in car) are Auto Thority POR.01.951.320 DME and KLR chips. Are any of you familiar with these chips and what mods they might be set up to accommodate? At this point I’m rather frustrated with changing chips and strongly considering leaving these in.

The PO installed AT stage2 chips in my car. They supposedly give extra 48 hp to the 951's. I'm not sure how they do it, but I think they are pretty old school. I doubt they would support many mods without causing some damage to your engine. I would opt for a more integrated package. Have you spoken to Lindsey? They will probably have a good idea of what is safe.
I know the boost gauges are pretty rudimentary, but I routinely see 1.8 at full boost.

That kinda crap is not uncommon. And my friend said "my" car, was his went thru, two other "Max" chips before he got this one. It would be better long term, to contact Lindsey, and tell them what's going on and ... you know try again.
![]() The AA chips are old and since, you have modded stuff, you could run out of injector (are they stock or were they upgrade ie bigger??) And the fuel and timing could be off?? Cuz sure it starts and runs but it might go lean under "Boost!" It would be prudent to add a Wide Band O2, to keep an eye on AFR's under Boost in any case, cuz you know "Crap Happens??"

Absolutely! Pretty sure we’ve all been there. “Damn, I’m tired of messing with this... it worked fine before...”. And then the clutch stops rising and the mirror is broke. And...
But yeah, I reached back out to Lindsey today. Dave was out but I’ll call him Monday. Got the clutch fixed tonight too, so feeling much better now! Tomorrow the mirror and we can drive for a bit until new chips come in or whatever.

Chasing gremlins gets old! Go drive the car some to remind you how great it is. Then ease back into the chase

Yeah pretty much what he said.
![]() These car's are old! And when you chase down one issue?? Something else comes up?? But the AA chips are old! And frankly I don't see how they can guarantee, 270 hp with stock injectors, anyway?? But if they can then it "won't do 17 psi or more?? Mine has the Max chip with 55, injector's (and supporting mod's) and run's (uh when it ran (non mod related issues!) 18 lbs on 91 octane without issues. And 21 or 23 psi by accident when it blew a boost hose and I had no boost till I got down to sea level and forgot it was set at 17 lbs at altitude, oops! I doubt the stock injectors ... would have handle that well??? Ie ... no head room. |

Uh... what size do you think stock injectors are??? Go to bottom of this site and plug into injector-size calculator: https://www.rcfuelinjection.com/Technical
bhp = 270 # inj. = 4 duty-cycle = 0.90 For street-cars, it's OK to drive injectors over 90% duty-cycle as it's short-term. For race-cars that see WOT continuously, better to target 80% duty-cycle max so they don't overheat. Also, unless you've upgraded engine or EFI system to modern tech, APE chips are fine as they match your engine. As long as you get the matching boost-bolt so boost-curve matches what's programmed on chips, they work great! Perhaps a little too rich in mid-range. Whatever you do, DO NOT use any other boost-controller method other than what's included in the APE chip-kit. Here's an 89-TurboS with stock-injectors and APE 2.7 chips @ 16.2psi. That's 295-bhp!!!. I worked with LR when building my 951. great guys.
unfortunately I am in the middle of rebuilding that engine. leaking head gasket that caused me to find one cyl had significant scouring. I run the MAX chip and 15lb boost. good luck.
