Engine mounts

Quick question
I have the engine disconnected at the flywheel (doing the clutch), the cross pipe and the exhaust is disconnected. I find that I can rock the engine with very little effort, like with 2 fingers. Is this normal ?
The engine mounts have gunk and stuff on them but I can feel that they have elasticity and I did not have a vibration issue.
Thanks Sox

failed engine mounts are not easy to identify visually. i remember they're filled with some sort of gel that leaks when the rubber wears out. there is a way to measure the space between the motor and the mount point to determine if they have collapsed or not. let me know if you don't find this info in one of the shop manuals or an old thread on here and i'll dig it up.

Well the mount on the passenger side that had the oil leak directly on it is barfed ....
So replace time.
From what I have discerned so far orignal is the way to go or maybe Rein if you can find them.

How about these ? now every one form an orderly line and don't rush out to get them

So the engine rocks on the mounts, but there was no vibration at idle or anything like that....
As you can see the drivers side is nice and clean. The passenger side that had oil on it has frayed rubber that I can actually dig my finger nail into...

i think that 'oil' is actually the gel stuff inside the mount that's leaked out.

Probably, but there was a leak from the valve gasket that I fixed last time so the mount was getting drenched in oil too.

that exterior oil bath is what probably broke down the rubber on the mount, causing the failure.

pelican has a good write-up on how to do this:
https://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Porsche_944_Turbo/82-ENGINE-Engine_Mounts_Replacement/82-ENGINE-Engine_Mounts_Replacement.htm

clarks also has a good write-up on how to do this:
Motor Mounts - Replacing

i also found this on the 'other' forum:
"Been discussed many times. The Porsche mounts work perfectly, cure all vibrations and last a long time.

ALL AFTERMARKET MOUNTS ARE INFERIOR TO THE FACTORY MOUNTS.

Doesn’t matter if they are hydraulic or solid they don’t work as good as the Porsche mounts and they don’t last as long as the Porsche mounts. Saying that many people fit them because they do not want to spend the money for genuine mounts, they don’t care about the extra vibration and they are willing to take the risk of having to change them again in six months."

when i replaced mine, i learned there's an OEM brand that actually made the porsche factory mounts and they sold them as OEM by shaving off the porsche trademark $$ logo -this was obvious when you look at the mount. they were about half the factory price but i forgot what brand it was. i know for sure it was NOT meyle because those mounts are known to fail. your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find out what brand this is and inform us.

it looks like pelican has the factory for $258
https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Info/95137504204M100.htm?pn=951-375-042-04-M100

they're listed at $206 on sunset, maybe you can ask if pelican will match the competitor price.

@sox, i had some free time and did the research for you. the OEM brand you want is REIN but they are hard to find now. the related thread is here:

copied this from the other forum. you can see on the REIN where the porsche part number and PV $$$ logos were ground off so they can sell it cheaper;

"Comparison between OE Porsche mount and Rein mount. (I painted OE black, stock is same color)

Most/all of the details found on these are different on other brand mounts.

Stock and Rein mounts have:

- square bolt section where it protrudes trough metal hat
- 4 double circular stamp marks on top of steel hat
- raised ventilation hole has stamping groove around it
- non raised ventilation hole is specific shape
- specific casting model and marks
- date of production is molded on top in right corner only"

Nize thanks I saw that on "the other site"...
Can't find any Reins so went ahead and ordered the originals from sunset.
My preference is always to give pelican parts the first dib, for obvious reasons. If the price is close I will go with pelican, but in this case it was over a $100.00 difference.
What are you doing with free time ? don't you have a car to work on

Just my two cents.
Definitely go with Porsche mounts.
I went with aftermarket mounts a while back and within a month of the install I changed them out for Porsche ones. A world of difference. Also, the right mount has a tendency to fail more often than the left due to the heat from the exhaust manifold.

Definitely go with factory. I've played with a few chinese ones and it's not worth the hassle.

$3.71 is the cost of a very oddly shaped paperweight - you'll never get compensated for the loss of time and the increase in blood pressure when you realize they're no good a month after installing.
