New 1988 944 Turbo Owner, Exhaust and Tune?

Recently acquired 88 944 turbo. Stock w/80K mls. Mechanic has gone through and upgraded as needed. Looking for exhaust recommendation for that mellow growl and want to increase HP to around 250 without going to extensive mods. Not going tom track anymore but want a nice sounding cruiser for my bucket list trips. I'm hearing exhaust, and a chip gets you a 20-30 HP increase.

Hey Glen and welcome to the Pelican Parts Forums!

We carry a few quality exhaust pieces from FabSpeed such as the MaxFlow Complete Catback system, which you can pair with their Turbo outlet pipe and bypass pipe to have a full system that will flow much better from Turbo to Tailpipe.

You can definitely run the catback system without a tune but if you are going to do the full system, with Turbo outlet pipe and Bypass pipes you will want to get a tune.

We also have some "How To" Tech Articles for the Turbo Outlet Pipe and Catback Exhaust Install

Best sounding without a doubt. Man this stuff is expensive. Never mind about the HP gains its all BS.

Get this. It's really a nice system and you can adjust the boost from low 11ish to about 16psi when ever you want. I leave mine at about 15 psi or a solid 2 BAR shown on the stock dash gauge. BTW I also passed Cal smog with this.

Get this guy to go with it. You can get cheaper ones but I really like the quality and looks of this one. BTW it works great too.

I put a Borla racing muffler on my system. The cat is removed. Knowing that the exhaust sound is already suppressed by the turbo, the Borla muffler sounds healthy without being objectionable and takes up about 1/3 the area of the OEM muffler.

Some people try to turn back their "odometers." Not me. I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

I have the chip, and a extremely huge exhaust system from magna flow, a unknown performance blow off valve, coney filter, and when it goes, it goes fast. I have a performance cat on it also. It stank to high heavan with out a cat back.

from experience, the power increase from an aftermarket exhaust is mainly due to removing the restriction of the stock catalytic converter which can be done while keeping the stock exhaust intact (knock out the internal honeycomb in the stock cat with a pipe, etc.).

it would be a better apples-to-apples comparison between a stock exhaust without a cat (or with a test pipe instead of the cat) vs. any aftermarket exhaust.

i've gone though a lot of aftermarket exhausts and you can't beat the sound and build quality of the porsche factory 951 exhaust system which is rust-resistant stainless, has double-walled pipes for thermal insulation, straight-through no-baffle flow, and a unique chamber-within-chamber resonator for optimum sound. to say porsche over-engineered the 951 exhaust would be an understatement and i've seen 951's making over 300whp with the factory exhaust minus the cat.

i've sold my stock exhaust a long time ago, but if i had to do it over again i'd keep the factory exhaust system and just remove the cat obstruction.

some photos of the porsche factory turbo exhaust attached.

OP...have you been watching the prices the non-modified, unmolested cars are bringing??!!!
If it were me, I'd leave it stock and try my best to keep it a time capsule. Even better if your car is an "S".
If you want a hot rod, buy someone's project or an R-Title car.
That boost is addictive, you do an exhaust & chip, you'll be adding a MAF, BOV, WG, etc.
Just my 2 cents.

That's a pretty looking graph, but it means nothing without a boost plot to go along with it

Now this is a reason to keep a car stock that I can support.

Always easy to reverse the mods... just keep the original parts.
I have an 89 Turbo that I intend to keep, but also wanted more enjoyment.
So, I opted to mods that can easily be reversed if the time ever comes to sell, which I doubt... chips, exhaust, MBC, MAF, etc are some that be changed without much effort.

Where the major issues surface is where the interiors are gutted and replaced with racing seats, roll bars/cages, and the like. Then, the car is much harder to go back to original.
