1989 17” wheel query
I have big reds on the front of my car, with 17” Italian turbo twists. I’m searching Marketplace to find wheels, and possibly including the correct tire size. Have come close, but want to narrow the search for more specific 911 and Boxster years I can select from.
There’s a lot out there in the Minneapolis area where I live, but can’t figure out how far out of my current wheel sizes I can go. And what tire size to match. Front wheels are 7.5x17 ET 47 Rear wheels are 9x17 ET 52 These came with the car, and are fitted with Dunlop Direzza II tires, I bought. 225/45/17 255/40/17 I wouldn’t replace the wheels but the right rear is slightly bent. The tire there is quite worn out compared to the other side. And, I had Hawk Blues in there awhile, and besides chewing up the rotors, the dust has embedded into the front rims. New pads and rotors now. I’d get turbo twists again, but prefer theses: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1242854376619561/?mibextid=6ojiHh They’re 7/17 ET 55 8.5/17 ET 48 Close enough? Thanks for that link. The wheel upgrade link doesn’t work anymore, but I sure had fun reading the 911 vs 951 article from back in the day. Hadn’t seen that yet. It’s interesting to read the performance differences between the two vehicles, and yet, the bottom line is that the 911 turbo was chosen for its raw handling, looks, etc over the faster 951. And, ‘89 was the last year of the 951 here, which they may not have been aware of, and the current prices for these cars are night day different.

I am running staggard 18" hollow spokes on my 89 turbo and they fill out the wheel well nicely.

I believe that I am running 18x7 on front with a 225/40/18 zr tire and 18x10 or possibly 11" on back with a 265/35/zr18 tire. If you really want to know I can pull a rear wheel and see. The rear wheels are close to the calipers on the outside but clear everything fine inside and out and I have been running these wheels for quite awhile now and believe that they came off of a 2002 996 but I bought them used.

Same tire size and fronts are 7.5” wide. ET is 50 on the fronts, and 65 on the rears. Same ET’s on yours?

My wheels are: fronts 7.5x18 et 50 pn 993.362.134.06 and rears are 10x18 et 65 pn 993.362.140.04 and fit fine on my 89 turbo. My fenders are rolled on top but I don't think that it matters.

Just as a FYI, Sonax Wheel Cleaner Plus should get the brake dust out of your current wheels. Not cheap, but it works well. I have those same Italian twists on my '87 with the same brake dust issues. One of my rear wheels is slightly bent too - I think it's the right side as well. I'm also looking for new wheels, but would like to stay 17".
This was today, getting the iron remover treatment and after I used Sonax - first time I've used it on this car. I couldn't believe how black the rinse water was. ![]() |

Stock tire size was 225/50/16 which is 24.9"
Comparable 17" tire sizes would be 255/40/17 (25") 225/45/17 (25") Feel free to explore for yourself - depending on the width of front/rear wheel you will want to play around with tire widths and sidewalls (remember sidewall number is a percentage of width) https://tiresize.com/calculator/ Lots of wheel options out there in both 17 and 18.
