Noise while turning left
I know first answer "only make right turns"...
When I got back from my trip to Maine 7k plus miles, I started hearing a noise not quite grinding and not quite rubbing, only happened when the car was turning left under power. Went away if power was removed as in got off the throttle, pushed in the clutch or went to neutral. It got slightly worse with the trip to California 5k plus miles this year. Things I have done: -Made sure that there is no wheels rubbing on the fenders etc. -Replaced front and rear wheel bearings. -Took off the trans-axles and checked the CV joints. Boots are good, plenty of grease, no noise from them when turning them, no play other then the slight in out (towards the diff and back) this allows the wheel to move up and down as the car goes over bumps etc. -What I did not do and should have was to swap the left to right to see if the issue moved...will do that next. Any other suggestions ? Thanks Sox

I would still check that one of them hasn't collapsed.

Swapped the CVs, no difference....
I wonder if it is the exhaust moving in a turn and hitting the body some where which then transmits the engine noise into the cabin ? I cannot move the exhaust enough to make it touch anything. I am not for sure but I think this showed up after I put the 3" pipe all the way through. Thanks Sox

check if your exhaust is clearing the driver side cv axle correctly. I had a similar issue when i re-installed my exhaust the wrong way (over vs under the axle).

Nize Mine is under the the axle. With the car on a lift and the wheels all the way down (to the stops) there is almost an inch between the top of exhaust pipe and the bottom of the axle.

Further, the noise is not related to side wards G force. I.E turning hard. It happens even on slow gentle sweeping turns. It goes away if I push in the clutch or do the turn in neutral, or doing the turn while coasting but in gear. Finally the engine has to be under load, not boost just accelerating.

Found it...there was a muffler hanger that had broken right up in the top where I could not see it. I could not make the exhaust touch the under side of the car, but under load with the engine torquing the exhaust turned just enough to let the bolt holding the broken hanger touch the body.
Hence under load(torque) twisting the engine, and turning left simultaneously. What a PIA to trouble shoot. Sox

In case curious minds want to know...I hung out of the hatch and moved the muffler tip around while my wife drove.
Good thing none of our finest saw us, or my wife might have had a hard time explaining ![]() Sox

Haha yeah, “only make right turns” was definitely my first thought!
You’ve already done a solid job narrowing things down. Since the noise happens only under left turns with power applied, it’s likely something in the drivetrain that’s under load, not suspension-related. |
