Torque tube - anyone have these symptoms?

I did see a small silver sliver when I changed the transaxle fluid. Starting to feel like it might be that, I don't think I have the traditional torque tube noise(s). Car has 94k miles on it.

Has anyone had a torque tube noise that sounds exactly like a rear wheel bearing drone? (Bearings replaced by me, no change).

I can “feel” some sort of rotational vibration if I put my hand around the shifter boot while driving and that doesn’t really change whether the car is in or out of gear. I can't replicate this feeling/noise unless the car is moving. I don't get any noise in or out of gear when parked. It drives and shifts great and if I stay under 30 MPH or so you can't hear anything. Highway speed is a loud howling coming from the rear.

Anyone else gone through this? I have a lift, is there a definitive way to rule the TT in or out? If not the TT, it has to be the transaxle wouldn't it? '86 Turbo.

thanks
Bob

Does it change depending on which direction you turn while at speed ?

Definitive way to isolate the TT bearings:

1) Disconnect TT drive shaft from transaxle by sliding coupler back towards the input shaft.

2) Rotate the TT drive shaft by either:
a) running the engine with the clutch pedal up
b) clutch pedal down, spin the driveshaft by hand.

Note: I always tested the bearings with the TT out of the car, in a dead quiet room, spinning by hand.

I’ll do that test again, I don’t think so.

That’s a good idea. If the noise is TT related, I would think it would be easy to hear/feel based upon what I hear driving.
