need help on pricing an '86 951
Hey guys,
I am going to be selling my '84 944, and buying a turbo. I have a nice one in my sights right now, owned by a friend-of-a-friend. I am going to go look at it next week. So, the only info i have is what my friend, and the guy selling the car have told me. I am hoping for your help figuring out what it's worth. Here's what i know about the car so far. -'86 951 58K miles!!! -Original owner, all records, most work performed at the same shop i take mine to, a top-notch shop. -Garage kept it's whole life. -Paint has a few small chips, but otherwise the entire car is flawless (dark blue, with light grey interior) -Loaded, Sport everything (seats, suspension, etc...) -Not sure about LSD, but he said it PROBABLY does have it. -Been autox'ed only a few times, and on the track a couple of times. Now only a couple of bad things AC compressor is shot. Timing belt was last done about 8-10 years ago (only about 10K miles, he hardle ever drives it) I'm guessing the tires are probably dried out, but I'm not sure. Not a big deal, i was planning on putting on 17's and some sticky rubber. He says he has been asking 11K, i know that's too high. I think i might be able to get him down to 8-9. Does that sound reasonable? What would be reasonable for this car? If i can get him down to a reasonable price, i will definetly do a PPI. Thanks, Mike |

I have one doubt, may be i haveīnt understand....why the timing belt was replaced so soon??
I think 11k is a bit high price, but mileage is very low.Despite that,if timing belt was replaced when 10k miles, may be with about 50k more is time to change it other time....in porsche factory they told me to change it every 70k kilometers, about 43k miles. Also check oil leakages, mineīs had few;it has 77k miles, not so much, but thatīs due to age.Change all the seals is a bit expensive,at least at porsche factory....But material is cheap, there are only gaskets and things like that. Mineīs also have ac compressor dead...and here we have had about 45-50 degrees this summer... Cheap solution?Down your windows and open the hatch! ![]() Donīt know if your 84 944 had this, but sure itīs like that. If that stuff is ok,I would consider your 8k $ or so like a good price. And one thing is sure ![]()

Thanks for the reply,
Anyone else have comments on the price? BTW, the timing belt was replaced about 10K ago. That would have been at about 48K on the odometer. |

If it is that loaded and is 1 owner with all records, I think $9500 is fair.
I don't care if the belt was changed or not. Change the timing belt, water pump and do the front seals. That way you are starting out with the car right. My 2 cents. -g

Change the belts. If the tires dry out, so do the belts. Probably would do the water pump as well.
Just did the Sanden compressor conversion on mine. It is working well. I first tried to replace the front seal on the Nippon but it still leaked.

I know the belts need to be changed, if i do end up buying it, i'm considering having it towed because the belts are so old (even though the current owner still drives it) I bought the P9201 tool for my '84 so i can do the belts and seals myself on this car as well.
I will definetly replace the compressor with the rotary one. I'll probably change all the AC hoses and o-rings as well, since i need to change the reciever/drier anyway, and convert to 134A, since R12 is getting so damn expensive! I think i paid $45 for a 1 lb can last time i bought it! Do you think the water pump really needs to be changed at 58K? i thought the turbos got improved water pumps! i figured i'll do the water pump at 90K when i do the belts again. What things should i look for as problems given the car doesn't get used much? |

I just suggest doing the water pump since you are in there doing everything else.
