time to replace shocks?
 

i have an 88 944 turbo with 160k miles on it, i'm the original owner. everything on the car is original stock.

i'm wondering if anyone knows when the shock absorbers should normally be replaced. i haven't noticed any difference in ride or cornering ability, but i did notice that the rods above the wheel wells in the engine compartment appear to be higher now, because there's about a quarter inch of noticable gap between spacers there.

i don't do the type of high-cornering driving that would really work out the shocks, nor do i run over lots of bumpy roads, it's mostly all freeway driving.

should i worry about the small gap (it wasn't there a few years ago, and hasn't increased noticably in the last 2years), or is this something not really worth mentioning?

any help or advice would be appreciated. thanks!

If they are not leaking and if the car does not bounce up and down like a GM car and you are happy with the drive, I'd leave them alone.

Yeah, I agree w/ Lawrence, if it feels good to you and isn't 'floating' too much why replace them? I do think you've gotten your moneys worth out of them!, I imagine most people would expect to have replaced them by now. Is your car a 951S?
