K-26 Hybrids
I've heard of the K26/K27/28 hybrids, but have heard about a Garret hybrid K26/T04E.
Are there any turbo gurus that can help?

Your stock car started its life with a K26/6 ... #6 hotside .... and a K26 cold side (compressor). The TUrbo S has a bigger hotside which ran a K26/8
Simplifying things... a K26/8 will develop more boost but may take longer to develop it.... So the hotsides are spun buy your exhaust so if we change the cold side to something bigger..... we can develop more boost So the first configurations you will run into are K27/6 .... so you have a larger compressor compared to the K26 ..... then you will see K27/8 develop more boost but may take longer to spool up... So its a balance of having a hot side turbine thats too big/small and a compressor that flows too much or not enough air. The T04E (garret) side is matched up with a bolt on KKK 6 or 8 side. The KKK hotside makes it a bolt on feature for our cars. If we were to use a true garrett hotside you may actually have a better performing turbo but you need to fabricate flanges and adaptors to coonect it to our cars. No matter which way you go, you need to address similar issues. Fuel management (bigger injectors), timing (chips) etc.....

Thank you for your explaination, have you seen any of these hybrids (T04E)?, do they really address the problem that the original K26 had (running out of air at higer pressures)? Assuming that the other issues of timing and fuel are to be dealt with separately.

<--- I have a To4e
Awesome turbo. Quick spool.... pulls to redline (lots of air)....and pulls a few car lengths on a 12 second camaro on a rolling start. ![]() The 2 ways to go IMO are a K27/6 and T04E (with the right trim). and with the right fuel/timing etc...

A fellow in Alabama (MJM Turbo) has contacted me about his turbo building service, just wondering if anyone has had dealings with this company?

1st thing you need to figure out..... is the following
1. How much power do you want. 2. How much do you want to spend. 3. Are you going to mix and match the pieces YOURSELF or are you willing to pay someone (tuner) to get you started... Quite a few turbo re-builders around.... figure out what you want in the end..... then go backwards..... ![]()

I am rebuilding the block with new internals and a tri lam head gasket in hopes of handling 12-16 psi boost under throttle. I had hopes that the T04E incarnation would get my baby there.
Who crefted your T04E hybrid?

You can run upto 18 psi on your K26. The issues are not how much boost you can run, but how efficient the turbo is at those settings.
An inefficient turbo will increase EGT's and possibly predispose you to detonation as well. So with a larger more efficient turbo you can run more boost (with more fuel) and in essence avoid the problem as well. So on a larger turbo you can easily run 15-18 psi on a daily basis with the right chips and tuning .... For example another individual with a Vitesse Stage 1 kit running at 17 psi was able to put down 337rwhp and 306 ft/lb at an a/f of 11.95 to 12.62 ..... your stock 86 only puts down ~180 rwhp (217 flywheel) ![]() I ended up going with a stage 2 from www.vitesseracing.com

Alex, how is the spool-up of the Vitesse stg.2 turbo compared to the 26/6?

It spools up a notch later.... but not much. Its like driving a Turbo S. Takes a little longer to spool up but then WHAMMMMMMMMO. Well the turbo S is like WHAM compared to the bigger turbos...
Whats interesting a stock 26/6 is anemic compared to any modified stock turbo setup. The problem is in the stock setup the wastegate begins to BLEED boost the minute you start to build boost!!! A strange setup to be honest. Whereas on most modified cars you will see people having setups that the wastegate does not bleed at all until the desired psi is hit.... (ex. set it at 15psi...stock ~11psi) You can make a 26/6 spool up failry quick but then it will loose steam almost as fast it picks up speed...... Most of the chip kits you see for the stock cars raise the boost, by-pass the cyclic valve (to avoid the bleeding effect), and remove the KLRs overboost protection, plus the timing and fuel adjustments............all these things really awaken up the turbos.... Vitesse makes a great product and John provides incredible support for his product.
