Help! DME/KLR problem

Hi,

Can anyone offer me some assistance? I have a UK 1989 944 Turbo SE. I need to find a replacement DME and KLR. All the ones I've found so far are for US cars, but I'm told that you guy's have a different octane rating pertol and emissions requirements, and so are different to the UK (Euro) ones.

My question is, is the only difference between a UK/Euro and US DME or KLR the chip? If so can I buy a US DME and KLR and put the chips in them out of my UK ones?

I've searched high and low and there are only a hand full of 2nd hand ones in the UK and they are *very* expensive. I've found several online in the US. All guaranteed to be working (my mech has all the diag gear anyway).

Any and all help / comments appreciated!

j.

Hi,
I haven't checked out the wiring diagrams yet , but from what I know, all US cars have lamda control (i.e. oxygen sensor equipped) and a catalytic converter. Their maps are also different, which as you mentioned are for their different emission requirements.
All UK cars on the contrary have no oxygen sensor, catalytic converter and runs on different maps.
The motronic components are otherwise identical and theoretically it is possible as you said to use US brains with UK chips and ignore the lambda functions (i.e. running open loop all the time, just like what your car is doing now).
On the other hand I suppose it is not that difficult to incorporate lambda control into your existing car.
p.s. Have you tried prestige salvage (leeds) or douglas valley? and isn't your motronic & knock controller repairable? I thought there are companies in the UK that do just that?
