I'd get something more mundane that requires less maintenance if I were in your shoes. If it has to go to the shop, the cost is high. Wait until you graduate and have a job. I'm assuming here that you are a typical student as far as finances go. But if dear old dad is the one who is going to foot the bills, then the shoe is on another's foot.

ok, well does anyone have any advice for a decent car that handles really well.....thats what i like, going fast in a straight line is fun sometimes but auto-x style stuff is always the best.

The Miata handles really well.
I've seen 944's go for many, many miles. But they can be costly to repair. Mine has not caused me much trouble. BMW's handle really well too.

Colleague of mine is your height or slightly taller. He has had one for a number of years. Go to a used car lot and sit in one.

I can't believe no one said go for the Porsche. Porsche's aren't about logic they are about emotion. Just find a good example and you should be okay (hopefully...maybe....sometimes). Man up. Buy the Porsche, so what if you have to sell some vital organs, you'll be driving the worlds best engineered machines. Thats where its at.

Just trying to be practical. I like German and some Italian cars. But I was a college student for a number of years and one does not have a whole lot of time to fiddle with cars during that time.

My 951 was dead reliable through college. I only drove it during mainly nice weather but it was a champ. Only thing that went wrong was a TPS switch. YMMV.

well, I live in Missouri....and it would be my only car, so reliability is probably the most important part. As much as I adore the porsche, it just might not be my time

Why not look at naturally aspirated 944's? Same price will get you exactly what you're looking for...and if your not a dragracer, the car will feel plenty fast and gobble the corners.

I would recommend the e30 based BMWs. They handle fine stock, most have LSD. Will be cheaper to buy, insure, maintain. Also comparable practicality, you can get one in 4 door, and they're really cute. I may own another someday. If you wish, you could look into the e36s as well. Either can be made to handle much better than stock.
If you must have a Porsche, the normally aspirated 944 is worth a look, I would recommend an e30 or an e36 over that car, however. Ahmet
