For all that money we should just wait and try to get a 944 turbo or a 951.

Ok, I got bored and added up the totals:

parts = $5450
labor1 = $9480 (120 hours @ shop-rate of $79/hr) or
labor2 = $1500 (150 hours @ user-rate of $10/hr)

Total costs for the conversion comes to $6650 if you do it yourself or $14930 by a shop.

Here's another figure to compare to:

+$6500 buy decent '86 951
- $2500 sell 924S
----------
$4000 to get a genuine factory 944-series Turbo car.

AND you get upgraded suspension, brakes, bigger wheels & tyres which you don't get with the conversion path. So, add another $2000 to the conversion cost + 10-15 additional hours labor to upgrade suspension & brakes to really make the comparison equal and we get:

$4000 to get a genuine factory 944-series Turbo car.
$9100 for user turbo conversion (165 hours labor)
$17720 for shop turbo conversion (130 hours labor)
