Just wanted to take a minute to introduce myself. I just purchased a 1986 944 turbo with 80,210 miles. It will be a third car. I currently very active on NSXPRIME; a website just like this for NSX owners. Anyways, I plan on doing a slight restoration and moderate performance upgrades. The car is 100% stock and is in perfect condition. Leather not even ripped and the dash is like new. Tires are new and the car is equipped with phone dials. Im very excited; anyways what needs to be done and what are some common maintence items that are prone to break? The car seems to run a little rough so I plan to do plugs, wires, and a new dist. cap but what else needs to be done? T/Belt and water pump were just done so I'll save some $$$ on that. Anyways, proud to be here and thanks in advance for your advice.

Welcome aboard...
T-belt is the only potentially fatal maintenence issue that comes to mind. Check the oil frequently, as these cars tend to burn some, and watch for oil leaks, especially from the front of the engine, where they might foul the T-belt (sorry if this is obvious.) When was the last time the transaxle oil was changed? Coolant flushed? Standard used car stuff... Also watch out for water leaks. Common areas are the sunroof, the back hatch, and into the passenger's footwell. With 80k miles, clutch might be coming "due", if it's original. Really, nothing to do about it until it goes. I think removing the crossover pipe is part of the clutch job, and a real pain from what I hear. Consider replacing it with a multi-piece crossover pipe while it's out? (I have no experience with this personally.) Run the A/C a few minutes every month, to keep things lubricated and working. But mainly, drive it regularly...they get lonely if you leave them alone for too long.

Out of interest, how does the NSW compare to a 951? I have always admired two Hondas/Acuras: NSX and S2000. Actually I could add all the Type Rs and and the sports bikes.

How does the 951 compare to the NSX? Very easy answer, its not even close. The NSX is like driving a ferrari but much more reliable. The look is timeless and the car still seems to amaze me. Ive done a lot of modifications to it and plan on keeping it forever.
I really like the 951. Ive always wanted one and im quite happy to have it. Im going to have a PPI done at Ray Catena Porsche to make sure it checks out. I dont want to dump $10k in the car for it to run right. It seems to be perfect but Id like to be sure. Anyways, ill keep everyone posted... |

lower that 4x4 man lol, does tein make a kit for the NSX? i dunno man, i drive my friends NSX all the time, it's been ported and polished, i forget the name of the rims and suspention, but i don't get the same rush out of the NSX as i do when i feel the turbo kick in, plus i pulled on him in 3rd gear and he can't keep up w/ me on the corners, so im happy.

NSX is pretty and great sports car, but I'll have to agree with ShApe-love my 951 - Brutal acceleration when the turbo kicks in and great handling! Beautiful car though!

When the NSX hits 5800 and the VTEC kicks in the rush is the same as the 951. I ran a 13.6 bone stock in my NSX... Whats a stock 951 run in the 1/4? If you want to compare an NSX to modified 951 then thats unfair.... My old TALON TURBO ran 12.80's and would spank my NSX-does that mean its a better car? By that rational I should by something american- V8 Settle down people Ill have a lightning quick 951 by this summer
