Question on a 951 Power steering pump

Is the power sterring pump supposed to spin freely or should it make a thumping sound as it spins? I have a used pump and its not installed on the car but the wheel spins with no nooise or anything form inside the pump? Is this normal? Any input would be appreciated.

The pump should revolve smoothly, usually no noise as there is always oil inside, even when new from factory or ZF rebuilt unit.
What was wrong with the old one? There is a re-seal kit available.

I hope your shop is also going to do the balance shaft belt because if that lets loose it will probably take out the timing belt. Then say hello to bent valves. And the belt rollers if those are original.

Strange as it may seem, I had a dealer in Chicago do my waterpump and timing belt 6 years ago before I knew much about these cars and the morons didn't replace the balance shaft belt. So last week reviewing records I discover I have a 17 year old balance shaft belt!
