Spun #2 Rod Bearing

I have determined that I have spun my #2 rod bearing. It looks like it scored both the crank and the rod.

I realize that I have to have the crank and rod both repaired or replaced. Anyone have suggestions on which direction to go, and where to have it done / where to buy?

Also, besides replacing the crank and rod, and associated seals and bearings, does anything else need to be done? Advice?

Thanks for your help.

Kevin

oh man, u prolly wont believe it when i say this but trust me it only gets better from here, as to which direction you should go, basically the crank most likely can be repaired easily the tricky part is the rods, u could have the rod repaired but that would most likely throw off the weight, and u can't just buy a new single rod (u can but i wouldn't recomend it) since the rods are all a different weight and have to go a specific way in order to be balanced. so i would suggest buying a new rod set of 4, get the crank grinded, get new sized bearings, and ur gonna wanna replace all the seals and gaskets u can while ur already there, clutch might not be a bad idea either.

What were you doing when it happened? What rpm? On track? Cold engine? How many miles on bearings?

120k on engine. Just normal highway driving, nothing crazy. Started out like a small sputtering noise - sounded like a small exhaust leak and finally progressed to a loud banging a few minutes later.

O.K. - Just went through this with a N/A I bought. The Turbo should be the same. Do not try and repair the rod. I tried but the thing came out 10 grams lighter than the rest and a bit shorter. I got some rods off ebay and they weight to within .5 grams of the others. The crank will need to be machine to .25mm from stock but do not buy parts until the crank is back from the machine shop. This may sound strange but most of the junk ended up in the cam tower so that needs to be disassembled and cleaned. Check the underside of the cam followers. Obviously, the block will need to be cleaned and I would get the block head interface surface.
I have heard various opinions as to if the turbo rods are forged - if they are not, and the rods are the same as the N/A rods, I have 3 remaining. Good Luck.

Where did you get the crank done, and what is a reasonable price for the machining?

You can find a good used STD/STD crank and rods for the price of having the crank ground. Where are you located?
