Post Boost Numbers

Ok tech question. I was beaten by a 944 NA today, I figure an 87 or 88, had a third brake light. Anyway I can't get my damn 87 951 off the stoplight! It sucks on accl. Also this land follwed me on to the freeway and wasted me again. I feal like I have the slowest 951 in the world! So my main question is this, with my foot on the floor I am only getting 1.5 Bar. I know that the gauges are prone to inaccuracy. But another earlier post said that they were getting 2 bar. So what is my problem? Wastegate? Turbo? My 86 never really got above 1.4, but it has a very tired engine, so I assumed that 1.5 was better and I was set! Help please I can't take another showdown with this 944 NA. I think it even lives in my neighborhood.

Scott:

Sounds like the waste gate is bypassing exhaust. Thats what is controlling the psi.

So I should get the full "2" then? If this is the case where do I get a new wastegate? And I mean factory. I am not going to mod this car at all.

If this can help:

Go to Lowe's and get a Compressor guage, 4 feet of vacume line, and a brass nipple to fit guage fitting, hose clamps and a brass T fitting.

Simple Tee into a vacume line after the butterflys. Run hose out under front bumper and duck tape to the fender.

It will tell if your guage is correct.

If you are slower than a NA sounds like the guage is correct.

Mark Blashak? rebuilds them in Canada I believe. Its around $150 from what I can remember. That way, you won't have to worry about modding the car out.

Wolf, would you recommend that I upgrade to the lindsey? You have the experience with these mods, so I trust your opinion. I just don't want to blow this car out like I did the last.

Well since I have the Ex Wolfrpi ride. Hang on a couple of days till we get this beast ( in less beast form back on the street) the Linsey Wastegate if nothing else is Damm pretty. but you will need a boost controler. I'm looking to be able to hold 15PSI of boost that seems to be where the problems occur after 15PSI. I'm going to be using a stock Turbo.

The Lindsey unit is great and for the ultimate in boost response you absolutely need it (expecially with a big turbo).

A rebuilt stock wastegate though will operate exactly as the factory intended - in a smooth and fail-safe manner.

We'll report results on the LR with the stock turbo at 15 psi as Grommit said. Stay tuned- it'll probably light em up in first and maybe second because the boost will come on so fast. It all depends on what you're shooting for.

Before you beat yourself all up,,,did you get to see EXACTLY what was under the hood?

Powerhaus had a N/A car that they converted to a 2.8L turbo a few months ago on their website for sale. Secondly, did it have a V8 stuck in the front? I doubt that is was a stock N/A but I know there are some strong ones out there.

You should have anywhere from 1.75-1.85 bar for an stock turbo.

Wonder if you have a vacuum leak. Check your vacuum hoses to see if all are intact. The little tee near the fuel rail at the front can break. If it does you only get about 1.5 bar absolute. Mine did this. Also check to see if the line has come off the boost recirculating valve. It's the valve that sends the pressurized air into the compressor intake when you let off the gas.

Factory sets it at 1.75 to 1.8 bar, absolute.

My 86 951 with Weltmeister chips and LBE hits 2bar, sometimes a tad over, at WOT.

I'm surprised the na beat you because at partial throttle I can hold it at 1.5 on the stock gauge and it still feels pretty damn fast.

It was a "She" and she was pretty cute to! Blonde, thin. Kinda reminded me of the Chevy Chase movie "Vacation" When he is in the staion wagon and Christy Brinkley blows by in the Ferarri. I will check the vac tonight. Thanks for the suggestion. I am alos considering getting the Lindsey wastegate depending on how Grommit and Wolfpri like it.
