How to care for a garage queen?
My 20K-mile '87 just sits in the garage a LOT, since I find myself not wanting to drive it because of the low miles and pristine condition and having it insured on a very limited-use policy with an agreed value. That, and not having any spare time lately... (I know, I'm nuts!).
I'm going to sell the car to someone who will actually USE it for something--maybe concours. (Info at: 1987 951--pristine, 20K miles) Until then I'm wondering what I should do to make sure I don't cause any real damage letting it sit for long periods? How much driving is needed to make sure everything is well-lubricated, etc.?? I hadn't thought much about this until today (Christmas) when I thought I would take it out for a run in the hills and discovered the battery had died. Thinking back I guess I haven't driven it in 4-6 weeks!! Before then I would drive it at least once every couple of weeks. I'm planning to jump start it tomorrow and go for a nice canyon run. Do I need to take any precautions before starting it up after this kind of layoff? TIA and happy holidays to all.

Mine isn't as low mileage as yours but I drive usually less than 1,000 per year and have similar insurance as you. I bought it 4 yrs ago and it has basically sit the entire time. I'm like you in that I don't have much time on my hands. You'll get advice from here to eternity as far as how often you should drive it to keep things in order. I've recently had to replace things that are as a result of non-use. Best advice I've ever been given is to "drive it as much as possible". These cars aren't museum pieces although we would like to think they are '-)
Good luck on the sale my friend. Cory |

You have to keep the battery on a trickle charger/battery maintainer all the time it is sitting between drives.

Hopefully mine will be okay in the Spring when I take it out. All I did was put it up on jackstands, unplug the battery, and put a cover on it.
I'd love to drive it during the winter, but the number 1 reason I take it off the road is to save some money on the insurance of it. Obviously, keeping it registered will cost me a lot of money. Crap I hope it'll be fine. Now I'm worried LOL.

I jump started the car and drove it with no apparent ill effects. I'll be getting a trickle charger to keep the battery up to snuff.
