Buy Car on Ebay? - Noob question's

OK, so I have been looking for a 944 Turbo and have about $8000 to spend. Has anyone ever purchased a Porsche from ebay? How does it work? I am very nervous about buying a car I have not seen in person. I know that I want a 86-89 944T. In my area, Pacific Northwest, there do not seem to be many 944 for sale, let alone any 951.

Shipping the car is approx $500 - $700. Is there a way to get a PPI from a distance? Any advice from people on the board that have done this would be greatly appreciated.

Here are is a link to the cars I am looking at:

If you join the Porsche Club of America (PCA) you can view a section called The Mart and you may find something more "local". You do have cars out there, just like anything else, YOU'VE got to find what's right for you.
I bought my last Carrera in NM last year and drove it home to Orlando, and it never missed a beat. A big part of the fun is the road trip home. You are correct, get a PPI!

Thanks Steve. I am probably going to join the PCA. I have seen the page for the PNW PCA club and it looks pretty good. I figured the kind of people who are in the PCA are all 911 or Boxter owners who look down on the "little people" who have 944. Anyway, thanks for the advice.

Don't let the " little people" thing get to you. I've owned 911', 912's, 924's 944's and 944 turbos and the most fun group I've been around is the 924/944 guys. They're most helpful on the boards and usually don't give a rats ass about those aircooler guys. There are the "cool" folks out there that go both ways. Hey, don't take that wrong or anything!
Drive every turbo that you can and don't let only price dictate what you buy. Enjoy the ride!

I would NEVER...EVER... use ebay to buy (or sell) a car...

Take the time to see cars for yourself, don't feel rushed...

See as many as you can so you can learn value from one to another if possible...

Use as many sources as possible to find cars in your buying area...
Good luck/skill...

I bought my first 944 on eBay. I wouldn't do that again. Ever.

The only time I would by a car on eBay was if it was a well-known car with a very public history. Otherwise, there is just too much unknown going into the purchase.

I bought my 'non-wrecked' 951 on ebay.
It was anything but.

Well, I bought the 951 in the link above. Of course I only live 30 minutes from the guy and went and looked at the car before I bid on it. Very nice car. I wouldn't of been disappointed even if I hadn't gone to see it.

I have sold a car on Ebay, I say get a PPI if you can, I would now only buy a car with ABS which was the one mistake I made - they had ABS in '87 but not all cars, I think you can get a good or bad car off ebay and I would only consider a car with many photos both of exterior and interior. I think the date of the last timing belt/water pump change should be in the listing, it illustrates the seller knows these cars and is willing to be forthright. I paid a little extra for mine because it was local and I could get a local PPI from a mechanic I knew to be excellent.

One other thing, I think the listing has to be accurate for you to be obligated to pay, of course one can say all sorts of good things about the car, show good pictures and omit the fact that the car has been crashed. That is why a very detailed listing that says things like "no damage history" protect you, if they turn out to be inaccurate at an inspection before payment you may not have to buy the car. Check the eBay rules to be sure. When I listed my 911 I was very accurate in the listing because I didn't want anyone backing out on me.
