Inconsistant Boost?

This is more of a feeling I have than a real tangible problem...

My car always pulls nicely when on boost. Sometimes, however, it feels like it's generating a lot more boost than others. For example, yesterday I hit the throttle at 3500 in 3rd gear on the highway, and the car just took off. Nice. When I tried to recreate the feeling a minute later, though - at the same RPM in the same gear - it wasn't as drastic.

If this is happening, is there a reason for it?

Seat of the pants feeling are not real reliable. You need to do your test on the same stretch of the road from the same place starting at the same rpm and same speed, same gear etc. etc.. with a stop watch time the boost build up time a few times that may tell you some thing. You could buy one of those 'G' meters, but I don't know how accurate or repeatable they are. (dyno tests will show you whats what but $$$$ )

Turbo engines can easily get "heat soak". This will rob the car of some power for a little while until the turbo cools off.

CJ those type of things are hard to diagnose. It could be anything from an exhaust leak to a crappy recirculating valve and another 20 things in between.

OT :The intercooler is truly a piece of crap on these cars.

Just swapped mine out. Same setup as I had before.

NOW I can jab at the throttle and get 5-7 psi off boost at with no load.

WAY too much restriction in that thing.

True but it occurs when the turbo gets too hot for the intercooler to do it's job well.

Thanks for the info, guys. I will keep an eye on it, maybe go and tighten everything up for good measure.

your turbochrger may be overheating. my car had the same sensation (real) until i replaced the turbo water pump, which had seemed to still be working b/c it passed the pressure test. i've been told turbos also overheat b/c the intercooler is coated w/ oil
