K-26 turbo hot side help
I hate bugging you guys for help but I'm in a bind. In the process of inspecting my k26/6 turbo I sheared off two of the 4 rusted bolts that go to the down pipe, that much was unavoidable.. My real problem is that now I have a carbide extraction bit broken off in one of the stud holes as I had to get the sheared off stud out. If anyone has done this before you understand it's immposible to drill further and stay in your hole. The point is otherwise the turbo is in great shape and I don't want to spend the money to replace in right now. I was hoping someone had a shot 26 or 28 turbo that they would be willing to give me a deal on??? This way I can simply interchange hot sides. Any helpful input would be greatly appreciated. Thank You. Bron.

have you taken the turbo completely off of the car? if not, i'd do so and see if you can figure a way to get it out. if that fails, take it to a machine shop and have them remove it for you. it'll probably cost about $40.
i saw you are in salt lake. we should get together.

Thanks for the response Nynor. You've actually given me advice before in the past. You know your stuff but unfortunatly the turbo is and was out of the car when I broke the rusted stud off in it, and finally when I broke the retractor bit off in the stud. Unfortunatly, you can make some good rust in 22 years. I had this same problem when I replaced my wastegate a while back but in that case I was able to use a plasma cutter. I have all the tools a machine shop has for this particular job. I'm beginning to think an upgrade is my best option. Anyways, we should get together. I've heard of another white 951 in the area. It must be you.

i can get together on sundays... school full time and work full time. i have
another friend with a 944. we've been trying to organize sunday drives. well, with an extractor bit broken off, that is quite the job. still, i can't believe that it is impossible to remove. can you take a picture of the broken stud, et al? you could try the guys at motorsports. ask for garrity. they specialize in 944's and 928's. they may have a used turbo around the shop or they may be able to point you to one or give you advice on getting the broken bits out. 487 6733. be sure to let them know that darell sent you!

It would need a vise on it, and you'd need some good quality carbide bits, but if you have the money, I've been considering trying this unit out: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=44991 Pretty cheap when you consider the price of even a used Bridgeport. Not to mention it would take up a whole corner of the garage.

Thanks for the ideas. I have a vertical mill, two. Yes they are very expensive so I keep them in the basement. The problem is, if you're imagining a flat surface that you need to drill a hole down the center of but that very center (carbide bit) is 10 times harder than it's surroundings. You can't keep the bit on the point, even with a mill. I'm going to try to weld a nut on it, if not I have a few ideas for upgrade. Thanks.

it sounds like the perfect time to upgrade the turbo with a garrett dbb.
![]() i do have a shot k26/8 with a missing turbine that i was saving to rebuild and get the one year kkk warranty on it. i might consider selling it, but the rebuild cost is a bit over $700 and you could get a brand new one for a little over that, or a garrett dbb for $1500, so it might just make more sense to upgrade rather than rebuild.

Thanks for the help everyone. Problem solved. I wish I had the money to drop on a dual ball bearing turbo...or any ball bearing turbo for that matter. I would not have hesitated. Nynor I went to your lead and he looked at the stud and said I was screwed BUT he just happened to have a K26#8 in great shape with only 70K miles on it. I was sold. It's not close to a DBB but from what I understand you can get another 40hp out of the #8.

4 bills. and he made out with mine. Hey, I'm not complaining. They were really cool guys, letting me tinker around the shop, really honest and the turbo is super clean. The way I see it, it was the least expensive upgrade I could have made. Nynor that place is a gold mine, i've been out sourcing for all my parts. They'll save me a ton in shipping. I told em you sent me so I hope you get free lunch or something. thanks again.

they are pretty cool. they let me assist with dismantling a 928 engine for rebuild. i get almost all my parts there. i order from pelican too, but its nice to help out the local shop. plus, they are willing to help troubleshoot.

I have a great working k26-6 (off of an 87 turbo) that im about to dump on e-bay. make any reasonable offer. I believe it has about 25-40k miles on it.
(I up-graded to a larger unit.)
