What is this and why is it not hooked up?

I just found a hose not hooked up on my turbo. The same turbo that is not idling right and has a turbo boost leak.

Could this be the issue?

And if some one could tell me the position or a photo of the ISV so i can get it out and see that its fine as well.. i havent searched yet becausei dont see it right away and dont want to start taking things apart with out a game plan.

Thanks

Marcone

That would definitely be an issue! There is supposed to be a banjo bolt in there.

Follow that hose back under the intake manifold and you will find the ISV. It's a small brown plastic round thingy with a whiteish colored top, seen on the right side of this photo

Holly cow !
That is the line going to the cv and thus controlling the wg and boost. It will cause a huge leak of boost and also not let the car get more then 1.2 bar before the wg will by pass the boost.
This is the infamous "banjo bolt".

Sorry #39 the brown thingy is a cv and not the isv.

Whoops, my bad, I read that too quick. Look left of the cv. ;)

Wow. That's just absurd. I'm actually a bit surprised the "hottern'hell" air coming off the turbo didn't start damaging stuff around there.

Like the fuel rail hoses.

I'd check them. Oh, and get a banjo bolt. :)

Marcone 01-05-2008 11:54 PM

Hrmm... I took the car out after taking this picture... was curious.. got electrical tape.. and sealed it to the big pipe. Car idles perfectly now. Ive driven it about 70 miles (*out of necessity) Without issue.

i know i should get the bolt... but porsche isnt open till tomorrow(monday)

Anyone have any idea why the damn thing would be missing..
and why is it the infamous banjo bolt?

As far as stuff around there.. everything seems fine around it. little paint becoming transferable to my hand from the intake manifold. lol.. Found a bunch of black crud under the pipe.. dont know why..there isnt a speck of dirt or grease on the engine anywhere..

But ya.. that was a huge issue.. car hasnt been pushed ..wont be till the banjo is there..

waht do i do with it.. just screw it in and go?

Darkhorse 01-06-2008 03:18 AM

Yeah, seal it up proprerly and then check your boost levels. Who knows why the PO disconnected it!!

soxnail 01-06-2008 06:36 AM

Its "infamous" because of of all the bad info that gets written about it.

also just so you know there are 2 aluminum seals that go on it. one below it and one on top.... what i mean is you put one seal on the banjo bolt then slide it through then put on another seal then screw it in.

Marcone 01-06-2008 09:56 AM

I have no idea how i managed to go without noticing it missing the last while i was looking around there... bone head move on my part.. haha

but just curious.. the hose that is not attached in the photo is looking a little worn and old.. doesnt seem to disconnect easily, meaning its not a hose clamp with a screw on it..

is it replaceable? because its tired and cracked on the outside.

Thanks for the help along the way guys!

Ill learn this engine soon enough. Im pretty much down with the S2 now.. i know it pretty well... just the turbo is new to me.

soxnail 01-06-2008 06:01 PM

This is what my bolt and hose looks like. The hose goes to a weird 3 hose deal under the manifold including the venturi. Read up on doing a venturi delete. It will give you a lot of info.
First 2 pics are the bolt and hose. Third pic is the venturi and 3 piece hose under the manifold.

Holy f'n stuff in that last pic... organized chaos.
Venturi delete. what will this do? Ill go research it !

Thanks

soxnail 01-07-2008 07:23 AM

It will get rid of the mess of pipes and hoses under the manifold.

even after you replace the banjo bolt, i would highly recommend getting a hand-pump with a gauge on it and checking all of the vacuum hoses to insure there are no leaks elsewhere.

Update...

Found the shop that has the bolt i need.. and the brass washers.

Decided to go to them with the car to make sure its the right one..

Only thing is... the car was not licensed yet, meaning i havent transfered the ownership since i bought it from the states to a canadian one, havent registered plates on it.. and didnt transfer my insurance on it yet,(which is mandatory in canada, 2000$ fine if caught)

I figured ... i have a white S2 and the turbo is White.. a white porsche is a white porsche to most cops. They run the plates while driving by and see white porsche.. im good....

So i Put the plates from the registered S2 on to the Turbo and go the 10 miles and get the bolt.

about 3 minutes into my journey, a traffic program hiding around a corner looking for cars that seem suspicious or missing front plates is waiting, they see that i do not have a front plate on... (which is also mandatory here) .. flag me down and inspect the car... ask for the insurance and ownership... which i do not have... I hand him the import papers and proof that i have some sort of insurance (but not on this car) tell him the insurance company is cool with it for two weeks.. (which i hoped he would buy.. LOL) and then he makes me stew in the car for 30 min.

Luckily my insurance company doesnt answer their phones quickly, the cop decides to "trust" me that i have insurance on the car and tells me about the 2k fine he should be giving me, the license suspension i could have and the demerit points i should lose... blah blah blah... impounding of the car that is supposed to happen.. etc... I get slightly worried.

But theres more!

then rolls around some asian guy with a cube van that gets pulled over by his partner, apparently something very illegal must have been going on in the back of that one... The cop comes running over.. hands me the ticket for not having the right plates on the car (170Dollars) and says he didnt have time to get the rest written up.. needs to go to the other car and sort that out which is apparently more important. Tells me to buy a lottery ticket and gives my license back to me. Only stipulation is i had to have the car towed...

The cop had a tow truck on the way... i call my friends tow company... cop says whoever shows first gets the tow... mine shows in 3 minutes and take my car.. Buy him a coffee.. and i got out of the 300 dollar tow and impoundment charges. :)

WOW what an afternoon..

Darkhorse 01-07-2008 01:59 PM

Life is never simple.....
After all that did you get the banjo bolt sorted????

Marcone 01-07-2008 02:06 PM

Hahah.. life is never simple.. add a dash of stupidity and.. you have a f-up caserole!

haha.. my bad..

anyways.. no banjo bolt... had to walk to work after it all.. didnt feel like springing for a cab, thought the walk would sort me out anyways.. haha

tomorrow banjo bolt.. and licensing and plates and stuff.

LOL

bigdeano88 01-14-2008 12:15 PM

Haha, only way that story could have ended any better was if a ricer had gone screaming by and the cop had gone after him instead of an illegal minivan.

kdjones2000 01-15-2008 07:30 PM

Sox, I thought that venturi's are only on '86 951's, and that they removed them from later models? I thought that Marcone's is an '89, so it wouldn't have one?

Cheers,

Keith
