Which camshaft?

I'm starting to purchase parts to rebuild my 87' turbo. I am looking for a camshaft. I would like to end up with 400hp at the rear wheels. The head will have a larger intake valve and port work. Can you guys give me some ideas? thanks in advance

not exactly sure on what lobes to get (I'm a newbie to the cams, I know how they work but that's about it). I know that good cams for turboed cars have as little overlap as possible. Typically the ideal cam for a turboed car is the stock one, rarely will an "modder" create a better cam.

Maximum Boost has taught me well

call milledge (I think he may use webcams, but he will be able to answer your questions)

personally, Id leave it stock. 400rwhp can be had w/o a new cam...

I don't know guys, a better cam will allow more air into the motor with less boost. This is why all the tuners have them, huntley, lindsey, scott gomes, broadfoot, milledge, I don't think they'd use them if they weren't gaining anything. I run a webcam custom cut, can't remember the specs. One cheap trick is to just find a n/a cam from an '87 or later, it just has a little more duration I believe. It's minute but so is the cost of one.

I'm not 100% on this, but I thought they only did n/a cam grinds?

Highboost-you're saying I should swap my n/a cam into the 951 motor if I get one? Do you know the durations for them?

nope they do turbos too, I've got one. Yep you can swap your cam into a 951 motor. The 944 turbo cam is actually just an early n/a cam('83-'85). Sorry don't have any specs off the top of my head but I've got them around here somewhere....

here you go, this is what danno had: the later n/a cam keeps the exhaust open longer.

http://members.rennlist.org/951_racerx/CamProfiles.pdf

web cam's 274 grind is: 480 lift, 254 duration, 234 duration @.050

highboost,

I will be doing a N/A head (head porting is my profession) then have the exhaust port nickel coated. I cant port the turbo head because of the lining in the port. I believe the exhaust valve is plenty big, I would only enlarge it to get a better venturi effect in the port. This usually helps airflow. I am looking to down size the stem to 11/32 and going bigger diameter on the intake side. Ferrea racing will make a custom valve.

"head porting is my profession" well isn't that convenient! Please give us some flow #'s before and after. Are you going to flow the intake also?

Sure, no problem on the airflow numbers. I can flow the intake one port at a time. I'm looking to extrude hone the intake.

I'd love to hear some real #'s from the extrude hone process, this doesn't happen to be an in-house job for you is it?

The other option you have is to go with an N/A head and port the exhaust side and coat them to withstand the heat and go with some nice large aftermarket valves.

Normally most people shy away from Head work cause you can gain so much more spending your money else where.............But if you can do it ...............hoooooooorayyyyyyyyy for you.

Boooo hoooo for us.

Wink

Highboost951

Yes but for R/D only. haha

ae1969

Thats the plan, I have a n/a head I will install larger intake valves. I ported the head that's on the motor now but their is not much airflow gain on either side with the stock valves.

the head can withstand the heat but it helps prevent heat soak(high engine temps) and keeps the exhuast flowing faster(less turbo lag),
