Soft chatter noise on 951's? Not lifters

Hi all.

This is more a curiosity post than a "oh crap whats that clatter sound" post.

This is my second 951 in 12 months. The first having a rather un-pleasent meeting with a coach

Anyway. On both cars, there is a very soft chatter that is rev specific whilst driving with the drivers window down. (I'm in the UK so sat on the wrong side of the car to you) The sound seems to come from this side of the car.

It's not a chatter as in the typical lifter clatter or a bearing knock. I used to drive a 944-S and didn't notice it on that. The 1st time I heard it was on my first 951. Which lead me to believe it was something specific to turbo cars. Maybe the turbo itself. But I realise that is more over to the left of the car.

Just wondering really if anyone here (especially any UK guys) has heard the same noise on their 951. Car pulls magnificently and never misses a beat. Has a full service history, great oil pressure, no smoke on boost and belts done a week ago. So I'm not too worried. Just curious.

Russ

I know my 951 and others I have heard have noisy injectors.

Yeah. I know the injectors on these cars are pretty loud.

Thanks guys. Injectors sounds very probable. Only just realized both my 951's had no sound proofing under the hood as opposed to my S that did. So I guess this could make the injectors more audible with the window down.

Now, back to changing out my thermo switch.

I had an odd noise on my 951 for months that I noticed mostly with the windows down. Sounded like a rpm related thing but the Brit definition of chatter might be different, I don't know. It wasn't the lifters or injectors...turned out to be a very small crack at the pipe/flange weld of the 2/3 header piece. It was never consistent which really threw me off. The headers on these cars are notorious for cracking at the flange welds, especially on the 2/3 section. I had a spare set welded up and replaced them, never heard it again.
