Clutch Install
it looks like the clutch on my '86 951 has decided to die. I've looked at Clarks Garage for the directions to replace it but I'm wondering if an average to less then average home mechanic can really do the job and how many hours will it take? How many special tools are necessary? And what else should I change while have the intake and exhausts off.
Thanks George

Clarke's Garage has a pretty good write up on changing out the clutch. I believe he says about 28 hours labor. Mine was a little more. The problem was since this was the original clutch and had never been worked on the studs for the exhaust system and brackets were frozen in place and had to be redrilled and new studs installed. But this is supposed to be do able by anybody who can follow directions and doesn't get in a rush. Good luck on your project and plan for the worst scenario; that way if it doesn't happen you'll be relieved at how simple it was.

Done it three times due to a flywheel seal that refused to do its damn job. Takes a good weekend if you're anal and the car is relatively un-rusted.
Does your 86 still have to original crossover pipe? Mine had been updated, I was able to leave it on. Not a complete list, but something to get you thinking about it- Tools: Sockets, normal and deep Extensions and universals hex (allen-type) sockets, long and short triple square tools - sometimes called cheesehead? torque wrench various hand tools, pliers etc various hand wrenches, ratcheting can be handy jack with enough lift to get the transaxle out (PITA by yourself) got air tools? sometimes very handy saw to notch bellhousing - good mod if you need to take it off again Supplies: axle bolts flywheel bolts pressure plate bolts exhaust gaskets clutch lever shaft and bearings clutch fork slave cylinder and hose perhaps intake manifold gaskets if you can't get to the reference sensors easily possibly new reference sensors if yours are stuck in the bracket exhaust bolts and nuts lightweight flywheel, if you don't want to resurface your currently installed one clutch disc pressure plate release bearing clutch alignment tool guide tube and bolts pilot bearing if your flywheel seal doesn't leak, don't mess with it anti-sieze tub of grease

you might want to consider using the KEP pressure plate with a 930 clutch disc;
Clutch R&R = Waterpumper porn
