My kid finally finished his upgrades

Travis finally got done installing all the upgrades he's been planning on for his 86 951 for the last few months.

What he's got:

Lindsey MBC
3Bar FPR
951Max Chips
Lindsey 3" exhaust
Open Tial 38mm wastegate

and then the recent upgrades:

LR Super 65 turbo
LR Stage 2 MAF
75# injectors, 17 psi
Innovate LC-1 Wideband O2 sensor and digital AFM gauge

Here's a thread his friend Jason made documenting the build. http://www.northwestnissans.com/board/showthread.php?t=84765

We got the Wideband O2 sensor installed two nights ago and Trav rough-tuned the car - it's making a crazy amount of HP! The bigger turbo takes an awful long time to spool but when it does kick in, it really takes off like it was shot from a gun.

We've got a serial port adaptor coming for our laptop and when that arrives, he'll make a better effort at tuning it this coming week.

He hopes to dyno it soon. I'm really interested to see where the numbers fall.

Yeah, he insisted on painting the cold side of the new turbo flourescent pink.

"Got the new O2 bung welded in yesterday. Setting idle A/F at like 15. But now that we can moniter the A/F better hes actually getting on it, it is stupid fast. Last night we did a 3rd gear pull, tires started spinning at like 5000rpms...

Ordered a serial port adapter so we can drive with a laptop and get things all legit. "

wow.

hahah nice! grats on completing the work. i'd print out the write-up and keep it safe somewhere in case you need it to prove value in the future.

Thanks!

Yeah, I saw what you did for yor car and that's really impressive - really great documentation. After what we went through with Safeco last summer, I have to admit that we weren't really prepared for it - I'd never been through a claim like that. If it happens again, I'd like to make sure we have all bases covered and good documentation is pretty basic.

I have to admit I though the passionate pink turbo was a little much, but he insisted...

It does make it very noticable, even if it is pretty well buried...

Any news on the 951 lately? Would love to hear how the tuning is going. They getting close to their 375whp goal?

He's been driving around with a laptop working on the A/F mixture, leaning it out.

He bought the Innovate LC-1 wideband O2 sensor package from Lindsey. Sadly, it records only the A/F mixture - not RPM or anything else. If you want to record RPM and other stuff, you have to spend another $300 for their LMA-3 module.

So rather than recording a run on the computer (with Logworks 3), then sitting back in the comfort of your garage and making the tweaks, he has to run with a co-pilot who watches the A/F on the laptop and makes on-the-fly adjustments to the fuel controller. It's a PITA but easier than spending another $300.

He says that making it run leaner seems to have the same effect as adding boost.

As to boost, last I heard he was still running about 19 PSI, max.

It's scary fast.

He says that it's actually making enough HP that he has trouble keeping traction when on WOT (as soon as the turbo finally spools up). Part of that problem is the fact that he's got really skinny tires on it right now - he's got a set of 16" phone dials with 205's in front and Falken 225's in the rear. Falken's are not real great to begin with, so it's not exactly an ideal set-up.

He has a set of Cup One 17" rims with Michelin Pilot tires (which have 255's in the rear) but needs to buy some spacers before he can run them on his car.

He's got it pretty well dialed in, it seems. I'm hoping he can dyno it sometime soon.

On the downside, he told me he thinks he's getting somewhere in the neighborhood of 8 MPG around town, now. This apparently, is the price of power...

don't be so sure. think about how much more gas you'd burn having to tune a few adjustments on-the-fly vs. recording once and being able to make several adjustments at once afterwards.

i'll bet he'll burn over $300 in gas by trying to tune on-the-fly.

Yeah, I agree - I would spend the $300 on the module. Actually, I looked and it's only $249!

With the LMA-3, you can log all sorts of stuff: Boost pressure, injector duty cycle, RPM, acceleration and exhaust gas temp.

I think it'd be cool as all get out to log, correlate and be able to analyze all that stuff. It'd certainly take the guess work out of tuning.

But Trav is pretty broke and so the LMA-3 really isn't an option for him, at least now.

He's doing okay with it, as is. But yeah, 8 MPG is pretty awful, even with today's relatively mello prices.

Yeah I'm too broke right now to buy anything else for the car haha. It's also been a bit too wet to tune much. No point in tuning it if I don't have traction. It seems to be getting progressively faster the more I'm leaning it out and getting closer to my desired afr. It's still stupidly rich though.

My dad actually drove it to work today so he can attest to the awesomeness. Really need to get my bigger tires on there so they stop spinning though.

Hopefully I'll have some dyno numbers within the next few weeks. Probably ~500 miles on the car since all the mods went on and it seems to be running flawless. I gotta get with you sometime Peter (XXX?) and talk about tuning. It's still new to me and I've got a pretty good grasp on everything but I still like to hear how other people are doing it.

Edit: And for the record my other set of wheels are Cup twos.

Yeah, I drove it to work yesterday and it really was awesome!

I was coming into the terminal and opened it up and blew past my boss - wide open in 2nd gear. Just as I passed him, I shifted into third and it backfired, bigtime. Really loud.

When I saw my boss later, he said at first he thought he'd been shot at or something, but then he looked at the car and flames were coming out from underneath (the wastegate dumps to atmosphere).

None of the guys I worked with would go for a ride with me. I was kinda disapointed they were so chicken.

I love the sound the car makes when you open it up wide. It's kinda like the sound that a big, big 4 barrel makes when you run it wide open without the air cleaner. This car sounds a helluva lot more intense, though. Much more air moving through.

The only downside I see with this setup is that every time you start the car cold, you have to screw with the idle mixture to get it to idle - until it warms up.

The only other thing is that it seems like it takes an awful long time for the turbo to spool. What's the remedy for that? A larger wastegate?

This has got a Tial 38mm wastegate on it now running in the single port mode. What about hooking this one up dual port? Make any difference? I don't really know anything about wastegates.

setting the wastegate up dualport can help the turbo spool a bit quicker. getting a bigger wastegate helps control boost more accurately.

cold startup tuning is a major pain, because you typically only get one shot to tune per day. it took me several months to get my cold startup tune dialed in with various temperature compensation.
