Rod Bearings

Looking at this car for a possible purchase.

Would like to know if there is any reason the Rod Bearings would have been replaced. The owner states it was for preventative maintenance. This is my 1st 951, and my experience is limited on these cars. Would appreciate some honest feedback. Also, what was the standard boost out of the factory?

The car can be seen at the following link,

Thanks,

Bill in NC

1.7 to 1.8 bar...
Don't know about preventative replacement of the bearings, I guess you could do it but more likely they were damaged by lack of lube or something. (Just my opinion )

mine were replaced because the engine was out anyway. if it runs right, i wouldn't worry overly much about it. have a PPI done.

after looking at the link, my guess is that they were doing so many mods that they went ahead and did those bearings as well. it is very nice looking and has some very expensive and worthwhile modifications.

I would agree also, have an ppi inspection done and also run a carfax to check for accidents, prior damage and accurate mileage. I can't believe all the low mileage 20+ year old 951's for sale with less than 100K. Seems no one drives them!!
Car looks extreemly nice though.
The owner is right all these mods are very expensive. Especially if you pay a shop to do it. Just make sure to check it out throughly, they are asking top dollar for it so you deserve to have no issues if you buy it.
Good luck!

If the rod bearings were replaced, I'd see that as a bonus. It is no myth that the weak link in the 2.5 liter N/A or turbo motor is the #2 rod bearing.

I did mine as P.M. Why not do it if you have the pan off, or engine out.

The seller is a member off rennlist. That car is a VERY nice example. There is a video on youtube of it. That vitesse kit makes it one quick car.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I think the car is solid, and deserves a PPI. However my "kitty" has $13,500 for a little red car.... and not .01 more. So I dont want to insult the owner.

If you take the engine out and will be doing high revs...cross drill the crank to avoid oil starvation!

(Was just searching for Soxnail's tps thread and couldn't find it when I ran across this.)
