How to smartly remove 951 Radiator fans

From Underneath the car, it appears it comes out the top, but from top, it appears to come out the bottom: thoughts anyone??

Mark

I just did this recently, but the details are already a bit foggy.

I think that I loosened up the fans and radiator, removed the radiator from the bottom first, and then the fans come out easily. This is the messy way, of course

I see no way to remove the fans from the top if you have not removed the coolant manifold, so my vote is from the bottom.

Good luck, Keith

Crap, they will not come out without removing the hard oil cooler line, & possibly the cooler, and probablyl draining/removing the lower radiator hose: weee. Not enough space to wiggle it out, it wont rotate & it's too thick.

I will look tonight, but it looks like the steel coolant "manifold" is in the way: thoughts on that?

Mark.

while i don't clearly remember if i removed it from the top or the bottom, i do clearly remember that the fan will not come out in the orientation it's in. you have to rotate it 30-degrees or so, and keep playing with the rotation/position while getting it out.

That's why I drop the radiator first, then they come out easily...

I managed to get my fans/shroud out and a new set in the bottom without removing anything except the fan switch connection at the top drivers side of the rad. But, I was really, really pissed off that day, so that probably helped...

I tilted it down on the drivers side, some serious

Sorry guys, not sure what just happened to get that posted 4 times...

Anyway, what I MEANT to say was, I tilted it down on the drivers side, some serious wriggling to get the top left corner past the upper rad hose, then out it came. As Haynes would say, install is the reverse of removal.

I figured it out.

1. remove both electrical connections from the fans (one on each)

2. from below and above, remove all 6 10mm securing screws so that the fan shroud is loose.

3. drain radiator & remove lower hose.

Steel oil cooler line is now in the way:

4. Remove 10mm screw on/near PS pump where oil cooler line attaches

5. remove both 10mm nuts by oil cooler to allow some movement of the hard line

6. from under car looking at fan, rotate fan about 15 degrees clockwise & work out fan, pulling against hard oil line as needed to remove fans.
