Question New here with question on DME

Been lurking since I picked up an 86 turbo in June and had seen a thread about no start/stall condition. It mentioned something about the solder coming undone and to try tapping on the computer/chip area? Now I cannot find the thread.

Anyway, mine just started this and a knock or two in the passenger footwell gets it back running. Does anyone have some insight on repairing this problem, economically?

Other than this, the car has been a blast to drive. Just getting very tired of the stalling with no notice though it's usually shortly after start up in first gear.

TIA, Joe

Joe, it will most likely get worse and worse.

Take the DME (And KLR) apart, it's not that hard to do. Get a soldering iron and remelt all of the connections in there, including the grounding areas. This also happens on the Cruise Control brain, so if you are having problems there you might want to do the same.

I have not had to do this yet, but this is the process as I understand it. Here are the Clark's Garage instructions on how to open the boxes: http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/dme-01.htm

Gook luck with it!
Keith

also, these guys will re-solder everything and guarantee it with a 3-year warranty for $350, can't beat it;

Well, got another day or so on the camaro then I will take a look at the porsche and see if it's doable for me. If not, the 3 year warranty one sounds like a good choice.

Thanks for the input guys.

I unsuccessfully tried to resolder mine. It got to the point where it'd die and i'd have to kick the footwell every 10-15 mins.

I bought a good used one for like $150. Works great now.
