Flywheel balancing

Since my engine is on a stand and I'm changing the main seal I'm considering having my flywheel and pressureplate resurfaced and rebalanced. Is this really needed considering that there is virtually no wear on the flywheel?

I have already split the flywheel and pressure plate. Unfortunately I did not tag the parts before I dissasembled them.
Are there any factory markings to help me to assemble them the way they were?

If you don't remember how the flywheel an pressure plate went together I would have them rebalanced. It should not cost much, i had my stock wheel lightned and balanced with the pressure plate together for about $125 locally. Just a slight imbalance can kill your main bearings spinnig at 6k rpm.

The machine shop will mark both the flywheel an pressure plate with alignment marks once balanced. Consider having the flywheel lightened also, I am happy with this mod. You can get the stock wheel down to about 8-9lbs from ~15lbs or so.

Thanks. I've heard that ligthening the flywheel on four sylinder engines may cause imbalance in the crank itself as the mass of the flywheel balances the crank. Any comments on this?

Have never heard that before. Personally I do not believe it's an issue, to worry about. There is a long line of 4cyl LW flywheel users. The crank is balanced by it's counterweights, the flywheel has no effect.

What you say sounds correct to me. I will have the flywheel balanced and perhaps lightened then.

I lightened both my flywheel and crank. Fesult is a quicker revving engine.

I managed to find out how the parts go together from stains and markings.
Do you still recommend balancing?

Are you reusing your clutch disc? If replacing it, you must resurface both flywheel and pressure plate (and re balancing is a must). If not, i would personally have it balanced anyhow. Its cheap insurance to prevent more serious damage.
