1990 944 S2 engine problems
I started up the car for the first time after the winter, drove for 45 minutes...no problems. I stopped for 30 minutes and then tried to start it again...sounded like a starter problem. I had it towed only to find out that it is a major engine problem...first diagnosis was timing belt and then when the mechanic dug deeper said that the engine is junk and it will cost 9,000 to rebuild the engine...CAN THIS BE TRUE ? curious to hear some thoughts...thanks.

Well, if it is a broken timing belt, it will be expensive, but not THAT expensive. Timing belt breakage causes the pistons to hit the valves, sometimes damaging the head in the process. It will need head removal, valve replacement, valve job, and reassembly. Figure $3-4K, worst case.

Thank you for your response madcorgi...I am not an expert of engines by any means, but understanding that I have been driving this vehicle for 5 years with no problems, started it up after the winter 2 weeks ago, drove it with no problems, stopped for 30 minutes and then I'm told "timing belt" and then that the entire engine needs to be rebuilt doesn't sit well with me, as you can probably imagine. So, it's not the timing belt. The mechanic said that the damage must have happened over time, but I never had any issues driving the car at all, so it's a somewhat frustrating not knowing what the real deal is...

It's pretty easy to tell if it is the timing belt. There is a rubber plug that pulls out of the timing belt housing (where the distributor cap attaches) that will let you see the belt. If you can't see the belt, or it's loose on the gear, it's broken. Sorry, I don't have pictures.
In any event, it's not unusual for them to break after the car has been sitting for awhile, especially if they are over 5 years old. I would suggest a different mechanic. PM me if you need more info. |

FWIW, I pulled my car out of storage and now have water in the oil. As much as I want to and like to do my own wrenching, I don't have the time to do it for about 2 months. So I'll most likely take it to the shop. The shop I use works on foreign and domestic cars. Porsche is one of their specialties and they know the 944 inside and out. They also build, repair and road race these cars. I have come to completely trust what they say and do. This is the kind of shop that you need to find for an estimate and/or to do the repair work. Like "madcorgi" suggested, you should get another opinion.
