944 Broken into - rear window smashed
 

long story short: The car is parked for the winter in the garage at my apt. Sombody broke into the garage, smashed my pass. window and rear window, broke my ceter console and took my radio.

I'm trying to get some info so i don't get ripped off by the insurance company but i can;t find out how much a rear window costs. The only thing i get is PN 477 827 027, which costs like $3k :eek:

Does anyone have an idea how much this costs???

That's weird. The 951 I just purchased had the same thing.

even in a garage, that's sad... the rear window had to be busted all in spite...why else would they have smashed it AND the passenger window.

Piss anyone off lately?

Where are you located? I've got a few rear windows available.

I think they smashed the back window to check for a stereo system (subs...)
I'm in montreal, but i want to know the price of a new one, so that i can make sure the insurace properly evaluates the damage.

The question remains: How much is a new rear window???

You can usually find rear hatches on eBay or on the forum for $300-$600. I have a passenger window I would give you for $25 + shipping from 49437

I'm curious to hear what your insurance does. I bet they try to total it for that hatch repair cost.

With a car of that age, most conventional US auto insurance is going to want to use used parts (I'm not sure how Canadian insurance works.) Most certainly for the rear hatch, maybe new can be sourced readily for the passenger window. I would not be afraid of used. Find a reputable shop to do the work.

There was a jerk that opened his truck door and hit my rear fender flair, putting 2 tiny 1/16" size dents in it. The preferred paint shop by State Farm quoted me over $1,000.

The image below is a photo of my old 1985.5 Porsche 944 NA, a gentleman pulled out in front of me in his Ford Taurus without looking and I t boned him at 45-50mph. He was able to drive home with a dent in his passenger door and rear door. I was not so lucky, my 944 (that I just swapped a new transmission in with the low 5th gear) had the radiator crushed into the front of the block. The front end was also moved over to the passenger side. I was given nearly $9,000.

Moral of the story, insurance companies will give you top dollar, just hope they don't total that little beauty you have.

I appreciate all the help and offers for rear windows. There is an excellent shop in Montreal (Campbell Garage) that i will be bringing it to.

From what i've seen posted, the price of a new rear window is notwhere to be found. The car was cosmetically excellent, and i just want it back the way it was. If it's a used window it better be in the same condition as the one that was there before.

I'll keep everyone posted as to what happens with the insurance company.

Also after cleaning out most of the glass it looks like the guy sat on the passenger seat on top of all the glass. Lots of little scratches all over the seat, and some little punctures. What a piss off.

They might total it; even if they do, consider repairing it with the money and keeping the leftover for a vacation or a what have you. I've made out very, very well in similar situations.

There's clearly no structural damage or anything, so there wouldn't be any reason to let it be hauled to junkyard. People are sometimes to quick to let their cars go.

from what i remember, the rear glass hatch is a dealer-only part, and sells new for over $3k. because of this, most insurance companies will try to total out a 944/951 that has a broken rear glass.

The insurance called me and i talked to the guy for about 20 minutes, not getting very far. He said "we'll use jobber parts" meaning used and aftermarket parts, not OEM. This pisses me off, shouldn't they put it back the way it was? What happens if they total the car?

Well the way I understand it you should get the option of keeping the car less 10% of the payout. If they say it's totaled and worth 7K, you keep it and get a check for $6300 or so. You might do OK if you don't mind having a salvage title and fixing it yourself. I hope everything works out for you.

You should get the retail value of the car minus your deductible for a comprehensive (theft/vandalism) claim. If they total the car, and you choose to keep it, they keep the salvage value of the car. That's how it works for US claims anyways.

The car is likely worth more than what they're going to give you; you'd be best served if they total it by keeping the car, buying a used hatch, installing it, and keeping the extra few grand to pay for stuff. You will have a rebuilt title on the car, but that's not that big of a deal, especially if you have pictures explaining WHY it was considered totaled.

Usually can badger them into submission if they offer you a low-ball settlement. I've been there and done that many times.

I got the car back today. Total cost is close to $3000. The insurance is only willing to pay $45 an hour for labour. (CAD). When was the last itme you paid a labour rate of $45.

Anyway it looks good, still a few things remain to be fixed (radio, tints, leather) but at least i can drive it now.

NEVER break your back window, the back window took up about half the total cost of the repairs woth install.

actually that's not a bad price for the repairs, the price for the rear glass from the dealer is $3065.70
