1987 944 Turbo picture

Here's 3 pictures of the car. I changed the air intake back to the stock filter and snorkel via the fender opening last year. I drive the car up to the lake a couple times a year. The round trip is 250 miles. Nimble, powerful and great mileage make the trip so much fun. While I try not to drive the car in the rain, some day I'll have to from up there in order to get to work after the weekend. If I understand correctly from a search of previous threads, I should disconnect the hose off of the timing belt cover to prevent rain water from making it into the air intake via the timing belts? This could happen if running into a pool of water deep enough to get pushed into or scooped up by the front of the engine? If so I can reinstall the vented cap that was installed with the cone filter set up.
Thanks for taking a look and your help is appreciated....UncleRay

There's supposed to be a hose attached to the timing belt cover?

They're chromed, so no bonus points yet.

the plastic snap-on covers for the wheel lock seems to be missing.

Ray,

I am not aware of the thread you mentioned, but I would not worry about pulling water up into the intake.

If you want, just remove the hose and buy the factory rubber caps that were used on later cars. Apparently the factory decided venting the belt covers was not necessary as there is so many openings in the covers.

Belt cover cap 944 106 103 03
air box cap 944 106 103 00

Most of the later belt covers have the hose nipple, but the hole is not cut through, so you dont need to worry about capping belt covers.

By the way, are you a PCA and Nord Stern member?

Your reply is much appreciated and helps explain the used belts that came out of my car. I replaced the water pump after about 9k miles of ownership due a seal leak and also had the timing/balance belts replaced. My concern at the time was heat and antifreeze damage. The belts with 22k miles did not have the extra cooling due to the cone filter setup yet they were in very good condition. The old belts were kept for future reference. I'll leave things as is for now.
I am not a member of the PCA and will check out the Minn/Wisc Nord Stern site.
Once again I appreciate the information, UncleRay

When the car comes out of storage in mid to late April, I'll take a closer look at all 4 locks. The locks worked ok when the rims came off last summer to replace the Yokohama's with new tires. The car is really quiet now (tire noise gone). I'll check out Pelican for replacement "snap-on covers". Thanks, UncleRay

I am not positive why the factory had that hose on the earlier cars. Not sure that it was for cooling. Possible that it was to draw ozone out of the belt covers, as rubber belts on pulleys at high revs generate a lot of static electricity which can generate ozone, which degrades rubber.

For example, 964s with the dual ignition 3.6 motors have twin distributors. The second distributor is driven by a toothed belt off the primary distributor. The original housings had no ventilation and the drive belts were failing prematurely. There is a retrofit kit available that attaches a vent line from the distributor to the blower motor to pull ozone out of the distributer housing.

The later 944 water pumps require much of the back belt cover to be cut away, so likely that no additional ventilation is required, so they ended up deleting the vent hose and blocking off the belt cover and capping the airbox nipple.

Nord Stern is the local pca region here in MN. If youre interested in various types of p-car related activities, its worth checking out some of the scheduled events during the year.
