Spacer or no spacer on dipstic guide tube?
I am installing the engine in my 1990 turbo and the time has come to install the dipstick. In the PET there is a spacer (944 107 329 00) on the guide tube which I ordered even though there was no such spacer on the guide tube when I disassembled the engine. I have now filled 6L of oil and still it is only halfway up the dipstick. To me this indicates that the spacer is lifting the guide tube too high.
Should I keep or remove this spacer? TIA

i think the purpose of the spacer is to prevent metal-to-metal contact between the dipstick tube and the oil pan, to prevent wear. i installed the spacer on my car.

Sounds plausible, but what about oil levels? I would probably need 7L to reach the high mark with the spacer.

I think the oil capacity of a 951 with filter change is ~6.5L.

With the filter, you are looking at 7.0L, if you drained your oil cooler it is more like 7.4L

Thank you. Exactly what I need to know.
It seems like I should keep the spacer then. I have a slight problem with it though. It has made it much harder to insert the dipstick. It takes a some force and it sometimes gets stuck on what seems like a ledge just before it is all the way down. Any tips on how I can fix this?

Common problem. You need to adjust the position of the dipstick in the tube before you screw the dipstick tube in place against the manifold. Here's a trick that I have used. With the dipstick tube unattached from the manifold, insert the dipstick into the tube with the dipstick extending out. Insert and align the position of the tube with the dipstick inserted into the oil sump/pan. Once you get the dipstick into the sump hold in place mount the dipstick tube to the manifold.

That seems to be a pretty common problem, with mine, I put the dipstick in, and when I feel the resistance, I twist the stick until it slides in.

Yep, that's what I gotta do until I get it readjusted. At least now I'm aware of what the problem is.
