Exclamation starter wiring help

I've got two wires coming out, a red and black, from one loom and another black one all by itself. I know the red goes to the small stud on the solenoid and the black one goes to the big stud on the solenoid. Where does the other black one go to? I figure it's a ground of some sort. When I attach the negative on the battery, it's like I'm welding. Can someone tell me where that black one goes to? TIA.

The other black wire goes to the large stud on the solenoid also.

The red and black striped wire is from the ignition switch and is the 'trigger' wire for the solenoid, it can be traced up to the 2 pin molex connector right by the brake booster. The other 2 black wires are from the battery and from the alternator.

I figured it out, at least I hope I did. The wiring diagram shows the larger black cable (5/16" diameter or so) going to the larger stud and the red and smaller black cable going to the smaller stud. I got the information from the Haynes manual. I was able to connect the battery safely and attempt to start the car.

That does not sound right, only 1 wire (red wire with black stripe) should goto the small stud.

I agree with Techno Duck. The only wire to the solenoid should be the red/black. The two black wires should go to the starter itself. One of the black is the battery lead, the other is the alternator lead. If you hooked the alternator lead to the solenoid and run the car you will be looking at a potential for a fire.

I will wire it as you say on Tuesday. I took the starter off 8 months ago and I could not remember how it was wired. I will take a picture of it when I get back down there on Tuesday and post it here for reference for everyone. Thanks again.
