pondering swapping an engine harness
my current harness has seen better days. from what i can see, the rubber boots are pretty much disintegrated and the external sheathing is cracked to hell showing the internal wiring (no bare wire, but it makes me nervous).
what i can't see also makes me most nervous -- i don't know the condition of the harness when it disappears from sight between the firewall and back of the engine. i have parts available: a lindsey racing injector harness, a very good condition used complete wiring harness and (arriving soon) a complete harness plug rebuild set. the LR harness is going on no matter what. i see three routes i could take: 1) leave the current harness in the car, but replace the connectors that i can reach. then wrap what i can with heat-resistant sheathing. 2) cut off the craptastic bits of the engine harness that i can easily reach, and splice on bits from the good condition harness that i picked up. heat sheathe like above. it'd be a lot of splicing and soldering, but that's something i am quite good at. 3) yank out the craptastic harness from the car and put in the new used one, complete w/LR injector harness and new plugs. basically (1) is looking like the easiest and best bet, while (2) seems sketchy, but not impossible. (3) seems to be a lot of work, but it'd be the way i'd prefer to go. what are my chances of pulling off an entire harness swap w/o pulling the motor? i don't have the proper garage handy, space and time to do it myself and i'm trying to keep costs down by doing as many repairs as i can. thanks! shane |
