BOOST problems EVERYONE read, please help!
Sorry about the drastic topic title, but I feel this needs to be corrected fast.
Ok, I replaced the wastegate the other day with a Lindsey Racing Dual Port Wastegate and Manual boost enhancer. After I did, the car felt NOTICEABLY different. Like the boost would throw in at more like 3300 in first and nearly 3000 flat in second. Yet these problems still remain... -it will sound like the car is almost 'stalling' when say I have cruise control set at 3K RPM in 5th gear, and we're on the interstate and the terrain starts to go up (i start going uphill) the car of course starts giving it a little more gas I suppose, and the boost gauge rises a little and the car kinda has a 'stalling' effect to it or jerking... I duno what it is, it almost seemed to eliminate when I stopped the car at a gas station and turned the boost controller up 2 1/2 turns, but it showed back up later. --today I went out and noticed that in 3rd, 4th gear, at right around 6K RPM the boost gauge thing doesn't show it almost at the 2(that line that's real close to the two), it goes to more like the 3rd line after 1! So it's like letting out 'boost' right? What do you think it is? I not hook up the boost controller right? or is it directly related to the problem above? --I also came to the conclusion that it only 'acts up' when I'm not under full throttle! if I just try to pass a car lightly on the interstae it'll do it... =( Any kind of help would be appreciated. Please, anything you have might be helpful! PLEASE?
Update on this problem: I noticed today, when I floored it, it started stuttering had that sudden loss of 'power' feeling, and in my rearview I saw it blew out some black smoke... what's that mean????????????? |
First, get a real boost gauge so we can talk numbers, the stock one sucks. Is the car chipped?
If you're having stalling problems and blowing black smoke, you may be way too rich, so pull the plugs and look at them. If they're black, you're really rich, and you need to back off the fuel. Let me know what happens. Mark |

Can't tell 100%, but it looks like you're running rich. That could be a problem with some of your issues, but for the leaking boost, I'd start checking for a vacuum leak (rich won't cause that).

damn the plug is scored, my plugs looked like that after a flame came out the back of my car one day...dude you are runnin' rich
|
Thanks guys, the boost leak is now fixed PrerYDoG, it was alot of things that were just made unclear to me because of my lack of knowledge with turbo's, and it's now fixed. How do I make the car NOT run lean anymore?
|
Craig - I don't understand your last post, you want to NOT run lean? Yet from what I see, you're running WAY RICH. If your Turbo problem is fixed and that's causing leaness, okay. What you need to do is get an AFM (Air/Fuel Meter). You have a boost controller and a dual port wastegate, and I'm assumming chips, any "standard upgrade" (not an upgrade, a necessity) to these upgrades is going to be a boost gauge and an AFM. You may want to replace that area under your stereo with a gauge plate and mount both of these in there, or get a LOTECH gauge pod for your A-ARM, put the boost gauge in there, and have your MBC in the gauge panel. Just some thoughts, but to even talk about being lean or rich, we need to know if you're really lean or rich.
If you turn out to be either one, you'll need to get a FPR and a Fuel Pressure gauge so we can start fixing the other problems. Mark |
If you overboost the protection circuit will cut the ignition, (similar to hitting rev limiter) will be accompanied by brown smoke (rich) and loss of power. using low octane petrol (Gas) will make it worse.
