Boost?

Getting my 86 944 turbo back on the road after rescuing it. The car is basically stock right now with the exception of the removal of the cycling valve and the addition of a manual boost control and a boost gauge.
My question is this, the boost gauge rarely gets above about 5 psi, I haven't driven it really hard yet but have put my foot into it a bit just to see. I can't seem to tell much difference with the boost controller turned a few turns either direction (it is a Lindsey Racing controller installed following their directions)
Is this typical boost for stock chips? From my understanding stock boost is somewhere closer to 10 psi? Could be I am just not driving hard enough yet.
My plan is to install a set of performance chips once I get everything sorted, just wondering if this is normal?

Are you using the black knob controller? I assume you are also using the stock single port wastegate? This not an ideal setup and it literally takes like 3 turns of the boost controller to even get a 1psi difference. Its very difficult to accurately dial in the boost with this combo and it will give very bad boost creep in higher gears. You want to put in a ball and spring type controller. The black knob controller is a bleeder type and is ideally suited for a dual port wastegate.

It is the black knob type controller and yes I do have a single port wastegate. Where would I find a ball and spring type controller?

Any place of your choosing really, here is one place i have bought from many times in the past with a good selection..

BoostController.com LLC - America's Source for High quality turbo boost controllers, silicone hose, and more performance products - 877-836-6155- precision boost control. Turbosmart Warehouse Distributor

Already having the cycling valve bypassed, i would consider putting whatever money you would put towards a ball and spring type boost controller and just go all the way and put in a dual port wastegate.

There is no harm in running the setup the way you have it just be aware of the boost creep you will get. But like i said, it is far from an ideal setup.

What is the advantage of the dual port wastegate? If I do the dual port I can use the boost controller I have?

The stock wastegate opens at a very low pressure which essentially raises your spool up time. The dual port stays shut much longer giving you better spool up and the ability to hold boost to redline. For a better description of this, check out LR's webpage and look at the dual port wastegate item description.

Yes, the black knob controller you have now is best suited for use with a dual port wastegate, so no need to change it.

If you decide to go this route, i would personally go with a Tial 38mm. It requires adapter plates but is the cheaper route. Plus you are getting a new part rather than a rebuilt and modified stock unit.
