944 engine oil and coolant 'mixing'
Hi,
It loooks like I have some 'mixing' of oil and coolant in my 944. I don't think it's to bad yet, but, I did find some oily gunk in the coolant reservoir. I am new to the 944 but I understand that this is a common problem. Can anyone out there give me some insight into this issue? |

most common two problems would be the oil cooler seal(s) failed, or the head gasket failed.
check for water in your coolant and/or white smoke at the tailpipe. also, putting the year and model of 944 in your sig line is helpful. darell

Milkshake in the reservoir usually indicates Oil Cooler Seals. For proper repair you will need the seals and an oil pressure relive valve (OPRV) alignment tool ( $40-50) AND Porsche recommends rod bearing replacement and cycling a detergent mix thru your cooling sys, Removing the oil pan to replace the bearings is supposedly a PITA,,I haven't done it yet.
Good Luck

Mixing
Thanks for the reply guys. Not sure that I really have a problem. But I do have some oily gunk in the bottom of the resorvior. The car rune great, no smoke and no overheating so I'm pretty sure that I don't have a head gasket problem. No sign of oil floating in the resorvior. Btw it is a 1984 with about 150k on it.
Thanks again, John |

if it is in the bottom of the reservoir and the car is new to you, it could have been from a previous problem and has been rectified. i'd take a good hard look at your dipstick to make sure there isn't 'milkshake' on it.

Also check the inside of the oil filler cap and filler tube to see if you have milkshake, or a large accumulation of water vapor (drops of water) in there.
If you do indeed have oil in your cooling system, simple easy way to clean it out is to go to your local supermarket, and buy a large bottle (60 oz) of "SHOUT", drain the cooling system, put about half a bottle in the cooling system and fill with water, run the engine until it is at operating temp, let the engine cool a bit, drain, and repeat. Got this tip form a 40+ year Porsche Dealer Lead Tech. It works like a charm, and costs you about 6 bucks.

Like the others said : if your oil dip stick looks fine but you have gunk in the coolant tank its no big problem you just need to change the seals on the oil cooler housing. I just did it and as soon as I pulled the housing off I knew it was the source of the problem. The parts are cheap , but doing it is a pain in the ass. Take off front sway bar, steering pump, oil lines, and you'll be able to yank it out easily
