How to get more hp?

Hey guys. I own a 1988 Porsche 944 Turbo S. I love the car the car to death. And she is so quick! But, just like any other guy, I want more speed. So, what is the most cost effective way to increase the hp. I looked at a MAF unit that Lindsey racing had but it was like 800 bucks. Thanks guys

Get a cat by-pass...cheap HP!! Wakes the car up. Make sure all belts, rollers, HG, waterpump and gaskets are all fresh and up-to date. Then you can get more HP safely. I just spent $2600 on a major service. My 89' 951 has 60k miles. Check out the 951 money pit thread.LOL

Chips, headers, exhaust, intake, turbo, ect ect. It's real easy to get hp, all it takes is $$. I would do headers and an exhaust. Decrease the pressure on the other side of the turbo and get it to spool up quicker. I would also get a stage 2 chip. Nothing to radical, something that will work with the stock turbo and fuel system. That will really wake it up. Once you start adding bigger turbos and high boost levels you start to run into issues. First money, it gets really expensive to upgrade the fuel system and everything else to match. Second, turbo lag, yes you have more peak hp but you also have a bigger turbo that takes longer to spool up, which sucks, expecially for street use. third longevity of the engine, many many people have built their 944 into a bomb with head gasket failure and engine damage. The more boost you add the more life you take out of the engine. Every step in boost increase exponentially takes more money to be done right. find a nice medium that fits your desire and budget,

I have decent headers on them now. Yes an exhaust is something in looking into. The turbo is completely rebuilt. A chip and MAF is next on my list I believe

Well it sounds like your pretty much there. It seems odd that someone would do headers and a cat bypass with out finishing up on the exhaust. Are you the original owner? Do you know that it's NOT chipped, It's usually the first thing everyone does. I don't know if a MAF would really be cost effective HP at your level of mods... but if your going to continue on, well

I am not the original owner. I just bought the car in July. I am about to post some pics up of the car if you wanna take a look. I think that the previous owner who did these upgrades upgraded the exhaust some, but it is rusting through already and I have repaired a couple leaks. I think he just got a better than factory exhaust, but nothing great. and your are probably right about the MAF.

A good MAF (Vitesse, Rogue, etc) will come with the chip/board, exhaust, Dual port wastegate to replace the old weak stock one, bigger turbo...depending on what state you live in, the MAF may flunk you on a visual smog inspection. Upgrades depend on your $$$$, as they can get expensive.

You need to know what you have before you think about upgrading. You could be downgrading, or samegrading.

Need to pull the DME/KLR and look at the chips.

What is a visual smog inspection? We have no inspection whatsoever here in TN.

they open the hood to make sure the factory stock intake system (and motor, etc.) hasn't been modified.

they also check under the car with a mirror to make sure the catalytic converter hasn't been removed.
