3" exhaust and catalytic converter question

i have a 3" turbo back exhaust i bought three years ago. i would like to keep the car street legal. thus, does adding a performance catalytic converter negate the performance gain?

thanks,

d.

When i run my car with the cat. section bolted on i honestly did not notice any difference from when i had the test pipe section bolted on. This is with the cats branded as 'high flow'. The cats seem to flow pretty well, i mean you can look right through the honey comb on them.

whos gonna tell though, i have a test pipe on mine. but MN doesn't do inspections.

I plan on running one just to kill some noise. Magnaflow says their cats eat just a couple HP...

i'll look into the magnaflow stuff. thanks.

i watched a video from fabspeed, and these things sound a bit rice, to me. mine isn't a fabspeed, but it is nearly identical. i am hoping you are correct about the cat killing some noise.

I'll be putting a fabspeed exhaust on in the spring, and it's the nature of the beast that it sounds the way it does. I grew up with big blocks, so ANY 4cyl car with an exhaust system doesn't sound right to me

I ran no cats for years on my 5 liter cars, and half the time I put the cats back on to kill drone or the unburnt smell.

nize, the exhaust i have is stainless from where the back half bolts on. it has a stainless muffler on it, i can't remember the brand, that is straight through: i looked down it with a flashlight, no obstructions, just perforations, and it is 3" in and 3" out.

the link to the sound files is broken.

My son (Trivgar) has a Lindsey 3" catless, mufflerless exhaust and it sounds awesome! Stand at the back of the car and you can actually hear the turbo spinning at idle. His wastegate also dumps to atmosphere.

When you get on it, it just screams! Scary, actually.

Legal? uhhhh...

But it's awful damned cool.

Nize has heard it...

I also have the 3" Lindsey w/edelbrock....absolutely gorgeous, especially when you're downshifting under an overpass while getting on the freeway.....

it's just too bad they don't make the edelbrock rpm muffler anymore. i believe that had the second best sound on the 951, with only the stock muffler being better sounding.

Considering sale of test pipe

I bought a quality test pipe from a fellow in Sammamish when I lived in Seattle a few years ago. Now that my car is fully sorted, I am not interested in installing the part... even though I could skate emissions here in SATX. I will post to the parts site in a month or so, but if anyone is interested send me a PM.

My most sincere condolences for the snow impacting my friends in the PNW!

i finally got the old exhaust off. a couple of questions:

1. the new exhaust doesn't have a sealing ring at the exhaust to turbo downpipe interface/flange. what do i use to get a good seal there?

2. what do i use to seal the connection at the front half/back half flange? i am thinking a copper gasket, but i am open to suggestions....

also, i realized that the new exhaust is not 3". it is 2.5". but, the inside diameter at the downpipe is bigger and there are no flat sections in it and there is no catalytic converter. yeah, i am a bit disappointed, but WTH, i'll give it a go.
