timing belt, water pump and pullies cost at a shop?
the most reputable 944 shop in town just quoted me 1300ish for timing belt, water pump, any worn out pullies and the like. that seems a bit steep to me.

One place in San Francisco wanted $2200k at $125 hour. Place a little farther out for $1300 for WP, new belts and pulleys ($90 hour). Ended up doing that plus fixing my oil pan gasket for $2k, which in the BAY area was a steal. The SF guy wanted $3200 for that job and said "we will see what else is wrong when we are there". Needless to say for real major work I don;t use the SF guy as he is a crook. Otherise do the job yourself if you can.
So at $90 it is probably average what you are quoted in the rest of the U.S.of A.

every shop is different. every mark up is different. you can learn how to do it, or go to an independant german specialty shop , it can range from $700 to $2,200 if not more depending on if you are replacing the water pump or any of the front oil seals. Also, things break along the way.. ..... .. almost ALWAYS due to neglect. things like water pump bolts or studs, and timing belt tensioner studs, or belt turn buckle studs or the turnbuckles themselves........ you have to understand the nature of the beast, you can expect labor from 80 -150 per hour, and a simple belt and roller kit only for about 230 to 350 .. a simple kit only, just the cam and balance belt, 2 tensioners and 2 idlers. Everything and ANYTHING else is extra. including removing broken studs

alright, the peace of mind is certainly worth it getting it done right in this case, just wanted to bounce that off the folks around here see what they thought. i am going on a 3k mile road trip here this spring, one less thing to worry about. might as well get it done right.
thanks! |

$1300 isn't bad - I paid $1400 first time, did it myself after that.

I agree wit others, $1300 is a steal. I have been quoted well over that and ultimately just did it with the help of fellow owners in my area for much less.

Auto Edge does the work that I don't have time or tools to do. They did my water pump etc for 1300 ish a few years back. Majority of the bill is labor.
IIRC their shop rate is around 110 hour now. I've spent a lot of cash maintaining my car and like you say peace of mind on a long trip is worth the expense of having it done right. FYI the belts were retensioned after xxx miles (don't recall the distance) and about 2 hours labor or so to get it done. Getting closer to bringing it home from storage in another 45 days. Now I need to go out and shovel some snow off the driveway and side walk. One of the few times that a few inches are better than a lot of inches.
